Asked by emc2rd (10points) April 18th, 2009

some of my extremities become ice cold and am looking for a neurologist to explain why I’m having this problem. Also, my right pinky finger is partially numb/paresis.

No, there is no diet that is recommended to help with hypothyroidism. Some foods can interfere with absorption of synthetic thyroid medication, so you do need to watch out for those. The Mayo Clinic has more on this here.

It seems unlikely to me that this coldness in your extremities is related to the thyroid disorder. Are they cold when other people touch them, or do they feel normal to other people? This may not be neurological. Can you get in to see your GP for a referral soon?

Surely you have a phone. Just pick it up and call you doctor and ask. There are a lot of suggestions to be found on the internet, but all the reputable ones will say follow your doctor’s recommendation. P. S. My doctor has an e-mail contact for questions like this.

There’s a book called The Thyroid Diet by a patient/advocate that is a worthwhile read. My thyroid is kaput, and I’m not a very compliant patient, so I can’t speak to results, but the book covers a lot of territory.

Forgot to mention that calcium (as mentioned in the Mayo link) will bind with synthetic thyroid, so you won’t absorb it. So don’t combine taking it with milk. Also, grapefruit interacts with practically everything (it seems) so ditto with that and grapefruit juice.

I don’t have hypothyroidism but I’ve had the problem with extremities becoming numb and the pinky and ring fingers going to sleep when I used to fold my hands at the elbow and keeping it that way for long (especially during sleeps). I don’t know how it went off, but I treated myself for cleaning my blood through natural therapies like grass powder, beet juice and a good lot of water everyday, and slowly the problem went off. So I guess your thyroid problem and this might not be related. You might want to check out natural ways to deal with hypothyroidism too.
