Basics? Or frivolous foods? or both, maybe?

You can’t go wrong with a casserole. If you bring him something he can eat a couple of times, he can spend more time unpacking and less time cooking.
Whatever you bring, try to add some paper plates, napkins and plastic silverware. Who knows where all that stuff is?!?
An old custom, probably Russian and picked up by Aschkenazim was to bring bread and salt to someone on their first day in the new house..

My first choice was going to be a casserole. Something that can be reheated easily.
Maybe crackers, cheese and sausage with some sweet hot mustard. An easy snack if he’s too busy for a meal. Muffins might be a good idea too. Then he’ll have something that’s quick to eat for breakfast.
Bring them a pineapple upside down cake and a tuna casserole. That’s what I usually take to my friends when they have babies or move. They are both familiar, comfort foods that everyone loves.
Canyou go wrong with any food? as long as it’s delicious, free food is AWESOME
magic brownies, not the kids ones
I bring deli trays, fruit salad and cut veggies and dip. Also, a plate of brownies. Breads, condiments, paper plates – all of the necessities and a cooler with ice and drinks. All disposable stuff, no worries. I also leave strict instructions not to wash out the cooler! I’ll take care of it. Last thing anyone wants, is to have to wash things while moving! I leave a card (welcome to your new home) with a gift card to a restaurant with the takeout menu, inside. We all know that the last thing you want to do while unpacking, is cook! Blah!!
@cak I’ll let you know the next time we move. That sounds great! You must be a great friend to have. :)
@jonsblond you don’t have to move, I’ll bring it over anytime. :) I have great friends, we just all like to take care of each other.
bring something you make very well, like a signature dessert. and also something that will last longer then 1 day at least
