Why is music so fascinating?

Asked by JMCSD (243points) April 23rd, 2009

All throughout the world for centuries and centuries music has been something that so many people have taken part in and enjoyed tremendously. What is it about fluctuating sound waves and different melodies that captures our heart and soul so much?

Certain music brings out strong emotions in people. It’s hard to explain how it works. :)

Heh, that’s what I was trying to figure out. Music is a love in my life (as it is with almost everyone!) and I can’t quite understand why it’s such a powerful jogger of emotions and thoughts. I wonder if there’s any kind of scientific understanding that anyone can enlighten me with?

“Music is… a dreadful thing. What is it? I don’t understand it. What does it do?”
“It exhaults the soul?”
“Utter nonsense…”
