I’ve just moved to Switzerland, am living in Basel, and want to see some nice countryside.

Basically all of Switzerland is beautiful, and nearly all of it is accessible by rail. I spent time there as a child visiting my grandparents (near Zürich), and no longer recall all the names of the places I visited. But one memorable trip was to Interlaken… the scenery on the ride there, and then taking the lift up the mountain to the rotating restaurant (I’m on my iPhone and can’t look stuff up to paste links).

Zermatt does not allow cars. and you can hike up or near the Matterhorn from Main St.

Try the Lauterbrunnen valley. I go there every year and still haven’t seen it all. Beautiful mountains, tonnes to do and see. Miles of well marked hiking trails of all difficulties. Trains from Basel every hour direct to Interlaken Ost and then change to the BOB train to Lauterbrunnen. The whole of the Berner Oberland is stunning. I’ve written loads of articles about my trips to Switzerland on my blog @ http://heretogeneva.com .

Have fun!
