In 1095, Pope Urban II declared a holy war against the Muslims from (what is now) Turkey. There was growing dispute among Christians and Muslims over the Southeastern borders of the Holy Roman Empire, and Urban II sent armies into the region (and later onto Jerusalem) to eliminate the Turks.
GD Kimble got it right on. Good answer.
Lots of information on it here.
