What is the best way to prevent another heart attack?

Asked by missjena (918points) April 29th, 2009 from iPhone

My father had a heart attack today and I’m extremely worried. He is such a strong man and while he was driving to work he knew he was having a heart attack n drove to the hospital. He’s doing good with 1–2 stents In his heart. His cholesterol is good so we don’t know why he had it yet. Anyway can anyone tell me about stents. I’m afraid if he has another heart attack he won’t b so lucky. I want to do everything I can to get my dads heart healthier. What do I do?

I don’t have any advice to offer, but I do offer my sympathies and best wishes. Hope it all turns out well.

Aspirin and plavix (likely for life) along with blood pressure medications (such as beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors), anti-cholesterol drugs (statins), improved diet, exercise, no smoking, control diabetes (if there). Statins are helpful, even if his cholesterol is “good”, because they have potent anti-inflammatory properties.

You should stay healthy and practice the same good habits he needs. No smoking, better diet, outside exercise, take meds, if you have any, as prescribed. By “being good” you help encourage him to stick with the program. He’s a lucky man.
