General Question

Are there any current commercials you particularly like or dislike?

Asked by Supacase (14573points) May 11th, 2009

Most commercials are run of the mill and easy to tune out, but sometimes one comes along that catches my attention in a big way. Some are really clever, others are incredibly annoying, but they catch my attention regardless.

Also, do you think the annoying commercials are worth it to advertisers – as in there is no bad publicity? If people are talking about how much it irritates them, at least people are talking about it and it is sticking with them. Or, do the annoying commercials make you avoid the product/service?

I like most commercials

The one with someone singing “how lovely to be a woman” in the background and the sonic commercials are my favorites at the moment.

Good question.

I dislike most commercials – I tend to find many of them offensive, disrespectful, stupid, lame, irritating, dishonest, evil, disgusting, distasteful, etc.

I consciously and habitually avoid buying or mentioning their products and when I do talk about them, I tend to be negative about them and/or point out what I hate about the advertising or other aspects of their products or corporate practices.

I’ve avoided a lot of pop media lately and so I’m not sure I have a current example to complain about.

This is a really cute commercial. I like a lot of commercials, but don’t really catch a whole lot of them anymore since we DVR most everything.

Knitfroggy
Yes, that was a cute one!

The Bird’s Nest Coca Cola commercial played during the Beijing Olympic Games was my favorite this year.

all commercials by the Oxyclean guy
which is why I rarely watch TV

Heineken’s, genius. It’s in Dutch but the gist is that the woman is giving her friends a tour of the house.

And I just found this parody by Bavaria.

I’m with zaku.

This is one of my favorites of all times

The original got milk commercial made me almost cry as a kid

And this Super Bowl commercial made me laugh out loud… a lot.

However, none of these are current, but I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Facade lol, that ‘lovely to be a woman’ one really irritates me…

elijah's avatar

I like the Kia one with the gerbils (or hamsters?) riding in the car listening to music. “Front, back, side to side. Front front back back side to side.” I also get the free credit report songs stuck in my head. I don’t think a commercial has ever offended me, I don’t know why people take it so seriously.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

oooh, I love those Mother Nature commericals for Vitamin water where Mother Nature is this boss at an office and this rabbit wants a vacation cause his wife, charlene, is have babies again and mother nature goes ‘what that’s like the 38th time this year, are ya’ll even still together’? hahahahah

YARNLADY's avatar

I hate the monotone one by Comcast, but I mute commercials, and only hear/see them by accident. I’m still wondering what to think about the “When I grow up, I want to be an old woman”.

casheroo's avatar

@elijah I love that hamster commercial! It makes me laugh every time.

Allie's avatar

I really like the Frito LayMade For Each Othercommercials. Especially this one.

They’re about love. What’s not to like? <3

@Zaku
Don’t hold back. Tell us how you really feel. ~_~
Sounds like someone needs a Coke

La_chica_gomela's avatar

I tend to hate most commercials that are on TV, but I really love this Honda commercial with the crab. I think someone on fluther showed it to me!

Facade's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir haha, it makes me think of you actually because I knew you’d hate it :P

SeventhSense's avatar

All the Burger King commercials rule. This series is great.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i love skittles commercials. like, all of them. i spent a day watching every one on youtube. i think they’re so damn cool, and i’m not even a big fan of the candy. but i appreciate their creativity and just ability to be random and appealing haha.

i hate ovaltine commercials though. oh god.

if i really really hate a commercial, it completely decreases the chances of me using the product unless it’s something i always use.

Supergirl's avatar

My husband and I think the eTrade commercials are hilarious. We particularly like the “shankapotamus” reference. Good times.

TheRocketPig's avatar

not into the Geico stack of money with googley eyes commercials.

elijah's avatar

@TheRocketPig Oh I forgot about those new Geico ones. They are horrible. The gecko is cute and the cavemen were funny, but those stupid googley eyes are just… Stupid.

ru2bz46's avatar

Googley eyes suck. A lot. They don’t even make me mad or disgusted or anything. That makes them suck that much more. Even car dealerships at least insult my intelligence. The eyes just…suck.

Allie's avatar

I don’t like the Old Navy commercials with the mannequins with personality. Just saw one and it reminded me of this question.

TheRocketPig's avatar

The Mr. T snickers commercials are classic too. Here and Here

ru2bz46's avatar

Lol! I wonder how many takes they had to do where they bean the guys with candy bars to get it right. That would hurt after a while.

SeventhSense's avatar

@TheRocketPig
Never saw those. They’re great… “I pity the fool”...

YARNLADY's avatar

I do not believe that a family could be taken in a car, blindfolded and then taken back to their own house and sit in their own chairs and they think they are at a restaurant. Would you recognize your own house if you walked in it blindfolded?

ru2bz46's avatar

My house would be the one that smelled like beaver, so yeah, I’d know.

SeventhSense's avatar

@ru2bz46
You might want to look into that…could be a yeast infection.

ru2bz46's avatar

@SeventhSense Actually, I was thinking of the beaver sausage frying up with my eggs. :P

SeventhSense's avatar

@ru2bz46
I really would like some day to try beaver meat..i’ve heard good things

ru2bz46's avatar

@SeventhSense Maybe I’ll bring you some if I can make the wedding…

A_Beaverhausen's avatar

@ru2bz46 no eating beaver!!

SeventhSense's avatar

@A_Beaverhausen
So that’s what happened to my box…you’ve been making balloon animals. ;)~

ru2bz46's avatar

Sorry @A_Beaverhausen. If it tastes good, I eat it. :P
Love the Durex!

casheroo's avatar

I remembered…I really like those Suave commercials advertised towards mothers. I think they’re super cute commercials.

I don’t like any credit score commercials, especially the one with the credit number as a pet. Weird.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@casheroo: I hate that one too! Especially b/c that service is such a rip off! Gar, it makes me so mad that they try to sell people something they can get for free from the government! Not to mention how stupid the commercials were anyway…

SeventhSense's avatar

@La_chica_gomela
Yes but you can’t get the score for free. It’s some formula or something.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@SeventhSense: Yes you can! <palmface> You can get all three reports from all three agencies! Those motherfuckers! This is exactly what I’m so pissed about! They make ignorant people believe that you can’t get your score except through them, when there is a freaking federal law!

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.

You should also know that, ” Q: How do I order my free report?

A: The three nationwide consumer reporting companies have set up a central website, a toll-free telephone number, and a mailing address through which you can order your free annual report.

To order, visit annualcreditreport.com, call 1–877-322–8228, or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348–5281. The form is on the back of this brochure; or you can print it from ftc.gov/credit. Do not contact the three nationwide consumer reporting companies individually. They are providing free annual credit reports only through annualcreditreport.com, 1–877-322–8228, and Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348–5281.

You may order your reports from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies at the same time, or you can order your report from each of the companies one at a time. The law allows you to order one free copy of your report from each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies every 12 months.

A Warning About “Imposter” Websites

Only one website is authorized to fill orders for the free annual credit report you are entitled to under law — annualcreditreport.com. Other websites that claim to offer “free credit reports,” “free credit scores,” or “free credit monitoring” are not part of the legally mandated free annual credit report program. In some cases, the “free” product comes with strings attached. For example, some sites sign you up for a supposedly “free” service that converts to one you have to pay for after a trial period. If you don’t cancel during the trial period, you may be unwittingly agreeing to let the company start charging fees to your credit card.

Some “imposter” sites use terms like “free report” in their names; others have URLs that purposely misspell annualcreditreport.com in the hope that you will mistype the name of the official site. Some of these “imposter” sites direct you to other sites that try to sell you something or collect your personal information.

Annualcreditreport.com and the nationwide consumer reporting companies will not send you an email asking for your personal information. If you get an email, see a pop-up ad, or get a phone call from someone claiming to be from annualcreditreport.com or any of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies, do not reply or click on any link in the message. It’s probably a scam. Forward any such email to the FTC at spam@uce.gov. ”

Sorry for such a long post, but it’s one of my biggest pet peeves, and I believe those commercials are misleading and the FTC should pull them or mandate that they change them.

YARNLADY's avatar

@La_chica_gomela It is aggravating, isn’t it? I have a question, though. The do sent out free credit reports, but I believe they are not required to provide a free credit score with it. I have received credit reports for all three major companies, and each one says they charge extra for the score portion.

SeventhSense's avatar

^Exactly^. I get the free reports all the time but they don’t tell me my score.

ChrisGrace's avatar

My favorite commercials are the ones that I am in. Those are also my landlord’s favorite commercials.

ru2bz46's avatar

@ChrisGrace Which would those be?

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

I farking lurve the Stanley Steamer one where the dog drags it’s ass across the carpet- Toby’s new trick, something like that.

TheRocketPig's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence agreed… I chuckle even thinking about that commercial. TOBY!!!!!

YARNLADY's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence To make it even funnier, my dog is named Toby, and yes, he does that too.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

The men singing “Viva Viagra” was pretty funny but Toby’s butt across the carpet blew them away.

SeventhSense's avatar

Well I posted it before but this commercial rocks
