How did you figure out that you were looking in the wrong place?

Asked by wundayatta (58741points) May 20th, 2009

What were you looking for? Where were you looking for it? Where did you actually find it? What clued you in to the fact you were looking in the wrong place, and how did you figure out what the right place was/

I found out I was looking for my phone in the wrong place when I took a break and got some yogurt out of the fridge and there it was.

It seems like whenever I’m looking for something, I always find it in the last place I look. Funny how that works out ’-)

Well, when I lose something I often look in the probable places, then “classic” places I leave things, then I start a loop, and look in the same place over and over though I know it’s not there.

When get into the loop, that’s how I know, but I still don’t stop myself.

Then I will find it in insane places sometimes like my wallet in the fridge, or something like that.

…my kid sister alerted me to a possible fire…i suspected a house fan’s motor was burning…i turned off the fan and took a huge sniff sniff sniff…it was badddd- definitely the fan…so i thought, until my brat sister started to laugh her tail off- FART!!! SMELLY!!! FART!!!

She so got me…psychology major, top of her class- total stinker- go figure…LOL

@BookReader In all my years I never smelled a fire fart. Therefore, I believe, she is not a psych major but you are in creative lit.

I was looking in the wrong place for over twenty years. In finally found what I was looking for when I least expected it. As a matter of fact I didn’t even realize I was looking.

Oh and I still have not looked in the right place for my keys.

I have lost my marbles, but have yet to find where they are. I know I’ve been looking in the wrong place because I haven’t found them. Perhaps I just need to wait until the kids have grown up and moved out.

I was looking for my ID card EVERYWHERE. I couldn’t find it anywhere. I looked in the craziest places. Under my couch, under my mattress, in my bathroom, on every surface top, on my mantle. Where do I find it? In my bag that I carry with me every single day. I felt so stupid when I found it=P

Say, “Tony, Tony, come around; something’s lost that can’t be found”. It’s an appeal to St. Anthony, and supposedly it always works. Worked for me the time I tried it. This is courtesy of Stephen King.

I spent years looking for something from my mother that she was incapable of giving me. I can’t really describe what, exactly, I was looking for. Maybe concern, answers, understanding, peace? I finally found it all within myself. How did I know I was looking in the wrong place? Years of therapy for her had no effect. Years of therapy for me did.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@jbfletcherfan of course it is in the last place you look, only an idiot would keep looking for something AFTER she’s found it.

Hubby looked for his lost bluetooth for several weeks before he bought a new one, and the old one suddenly appeared on his treadmill shelf, in spite of he had used the treadmill several times while looking.

I found what I was looking for exactly where I had left it, 900 miles away from the apartment where I was moving all the furniture around thinking I would find an expensive ring among the dust bunnies and dead cockroaches when I had actually left safe and sound in a ring box in my parents’ guest bathroom.

How did I figure it out? I didn’t. I didn’t find it where I was looking, and my lease was up, so I had to give up. I only realized what the wrong place was once I knew what the right one was.

And then of course there was this

I lost my keys a few weeks ago, and I was trying to leave for a meeting. I was on the phone with a friend and she was coming up with places for me to look (my purse, the mail table, my pocket, etc.) Alas, no keys. All of a sudden I hear this weird rattling in the dishwasher. It’s loud enough that she can hear it on the phone, and asks me, “What is that?” Sure enough, I had put my keys in the dishwasher and started it. Joy. Needless to say, I was late for my meeting.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@zephyr826 well, look at it this way…you got your keys sterilized.

After I divorced my first wife, I realized I’d been looking for love in all the wrong places. I figured this out the hard way – a divorce and a bankruptcy. What a nice one-two punch.

I’m still looking.
