Why do they call steam rollers, steam rollers?

They don’t produce, get rid of, or have anything to do with steam

They’re powered by steam engines (or at least, they were).

Because they &^$#.... Les beat me to it.

Up to the WWII road rollers were driven by steam. Even though they are now powered by a diesel engine the name has stuck.
