What does Memorial Day mean to you?

Asked by loser (15032points) May 25th, 2009 from iPhone

Party day? Shopping day?

I think about how my Mom lost her first husband in the Line of duty in the Korean War. He died saving the lives of others, one of which is now my Dad.

Day to decorate my graduation cap with Stanford icons and what not.

I don’t have any relatives in the military or who were in the military; all of my relatives in America were not and beyond that they come from Russia. It doesn’t have much personal relationship to me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think about the purpose of the day.

An extra cheesy pre-race ceremony.

Memorial Day means employing the personal freedoms and civil liberties that troops have fought to protect. It means that I can walk outside my house and be secure in the knowledge that I will not be shot in the street or bombed. I can speak ill of the government without fear of disappearing. Memorial Day means I can go about my business as an American citizen.

Having a day to reflect and honor those who served this nation. It’s also a day to attend a barbecue and get wasted.
