How long does it take to get to the moon?

Asked by penumbra (31points) December 26th, 2007

Now that there’s a $30 million prize to go to the moon, I was thinking…how long would it take to get there? How fast do spaceships travel once they leave the Earth’s atmosphere?

Don’t know. We’ve never been there.

There’s no speed limit in space, but there are fuel trade-offs for existing designs. Apollo 11 took 4 days to get there. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_11)

All depends on traffic, though it will probably be lighter this week due to the holiday. : )

I have no idea, except that satellites go a couple thousand mph. I do find that competition very interesting, but why dont they use that money for a more pressing issue, like alternative energy?

Less than 2 seconds, at the speed of light.

What a waste of money! We’ve already been there. Why don’t they make it interesting and offer a prize for landing a human on Mars?

About 2½ days averaging about 5 miles per second.
