My friend and I were trying to figure out why breast in our culture are so appealing? I’m really curious to hear what everyone has to say about this.

They immediately allow identification of the opposite sex. I think both sexes are fascinated with parts that they do not have.

This is a “duh” answer but breasts are profoundly erogenous areas, for most women and many men.

Theoretically, breasts are a cue to men that a woman is ready for sexual activity (ready to have offspring). Therefore, sexy.

There does seem to be an inordinate amount of fascination for what is essentially a bag of fat (I assume that when looking at pictures of boobs, men don’t really care about milk producing glands and ducts for delivery of milk).

Actually, I read a really intriguing article on this topic a while ago. In most other primates, the buttocks are the female body part that the males are attracted to—in many primates the buttocks even swell or change color during ovulation to show that the females are fertile. Some scientists postulate that when humans became bi-pedal, and our butts were no longer eye-level, females evolved swollen breasts to mimic the curve of the butt, since that was more visible as we stood upright. However, since we no longer have visible oestrus (ovulation) the breasts are always enlarged, which the male brain perceives as a sign of fertility. It’s also interesting to note that in other cultures, however, the breasts are far less eroticised than in Western culture. There are many parts of the world where it is still considered perfectly fine for women to bare their breasts to nurse their babies in any public space; in the United States, this would still result in some raised eyebrows, since breasts are considered erotic. In other countries (brasil, for example) a woman’s large butt and hips are still considered as sexy or even sexier than breasts.

Because we don’t have them…people want what other people have

I think of it as this we are just like and other form of life on this planet, we have certain things that attract the opposite sex. Birds are attracted to colors, or the homes the males make in order to win the lady over. Their are boars that have these huge tusks and cover themselves in mud, in order to attract a mate. In the human case breasts on a woman attracts the male. In the reverse order many of times the size of a mans penis is seen in the same way, or their muscular form. These are just the things that are attractive to the human race. We must remember that we are all still part of the world of instinct.

The Freudian mother complex anyone? Comfort, that’s why they are called pillows… maybe that’s what I don’t like to sleep.

All I know is at the end of the day I would gladly take them off of my body and hand them to my boyfriend, we could both be happy. He could have unlimited access to his favorite toy and I could finally have the remote back.

I’ve heard a theory that we as people have an evolutionary memory and the reason men are attracted to a woman’s breasts is because fuller breasts imply that a woman is better able to nurse a baby (which is not at all true, but cavemen didn’t know that) and men are instinctually attracted towards physical indications that a woman can bare and nurture lots of young. This includes nice curves because wider set hips indicate a woman can handle multiple births easier. And it’s man’s directive to spread his seed and have as many babies as possible, right?

Breasts are not, but titties are. So are tits, boobs, hangers, etc.
