Why do smart people act stupid sometimes?

Asked by atlantis (1867points) June 8th, 2009

I know some people are just fine one minute and the next they do things that will shock you, leaving you wondering if this was the same person or not. Any examples from your experience?

Smart people do stupid stuff sometimes because they’re still human.

MrGV's avatar

Because being smart doesn’t mean you’re perfect.

applesaucemanny's avatar

I agree with @MacBean and sometimes I do stupid things as well like if I’m getting cereal sometimes I would put the milk in the pantry and the cereal in the refrigerator and then I look back and laugh

wundayatta's avatar

Hey! Discrimination! Dumb people do stupid stuff, too!

Darwin's avatar

Because IQ is not the same as common sense, nor is it the same as wisdom or even maturity.

calvinette's avatar

Smart people probably do the same amount of dumb stuff as anybody else, it’s just more noticeable when they do it. Likewise, everybody falls all over themselves whenever a dumb person does something smart.

Jeruba's avatar

They can’t help it. A pretty smart fellow said not just once but more than once, “Intelligence is no barrier to stupidity.”

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

There isn’t anyone alive except for 1 hour old babies, that hasn’t ever done anything stupid.

SirBailey's avatar

Yeah, those TWO hour babies can be REAL boneheads!!!

PapaLeo's avatar

It’s a tactic.

Believe me, there’s been many a time where I’ve thought, “Just act stupid; that’s the best way to achieve your goal in this situation.”

Jeruba's avatar

Yes, PapaLeo is right. The appearance of stupidity (or anyway no exceptional intellect) can also be a means to an end for those who are able to pull it off. Some brainy folks can, and some simply can’t. For those who can, it can sometimes be protective coloration—camouflage.

tinyfaery's avatar

Because there is no such thing as smart people or dumb people, just smart and dumb choices. And whether those choices are smart are dumb is open to interpretation.

Ruthi's avatar

Variety is essentially the spice of life! If it weren’t for those occasional ‘quirks’ of ours, there’d be a lot less to laugh about. Trust me, I’ve been through moments when people just act so crazy, but at the end of the day they’re as human as I am….what’s more, consistency may not always be as important as we make it seem=)

Jeruba's avatar

@tinyfaery, you don’t think there are any differences among people with respect to the capacity to learn, reason, and comprehend?

tinyfaery's avatar

The capacity to learn, reason and comprehend has nothing to do with doing something smart or dumb. If a so called intelligent person does something stupid, are they not stupid at that moment? If a person of lower intelligence makes a really good decision, are they not, at that moment, smart?

Mr_Callahan's avatar

We just want to fit in.

CMaz's avatar

Because, stupid is what stupid does.

Jeruba's avatar

@tinyfaery, I was asking about your assertion that there are no smart or dumb people. That’s as good as saying that every slow learner chooses to be slow and that people we think of as having brilliant minds are really nothing but the product of good choices. Is this what you meant?

Blondesjon's avatar

Perhaps it’s not an act.

I had a very smart first husband…book wise, business wise…but very dumb when It came to “life” things. You know, like introducing your girlfriend to your very young daughter…very dumb. Mommy always finds out!

It’s called being human. In his case, it’s called being a dumb ass.

WhatThaF's avatar

i had an experience..
today I purposely acted dumb in class so the person next to would stop talking about school, teachers, and grades. I wanted it to look like I didn’t care bc I don’t like wasting time talkin about nothings IN CLASS.
I consider myself smart.. but your definition of that is probably 100x way different to mine. everyone is unique and perfect as they are. can’t define good or bad music nor good or bad fashion.

I know someone who is naturally dumb and she doesn’t know it. she’s lived her life like that, so how could you tell her she’s not normal? no one cant accurately define normal..

Did I really just GA MrGeneVan?

Smart and wise do not always come as a pair.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

because despite everything, they’re still people.

mattbrowne's avatar

Everyone needs a break from time to time. Maybe they want to test the reactions of others.

Schenectandy's avatar

What you’ve really got to worry about is the times stupid people act smart.

PapaLeo's avatar

@Schenectandy Which leads me to one of my favorite quotes:

“The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure, and the intelligent are full of doubt.” – Bertrand Russell

atlantis's avatar

@Schenectandy do u have a personal experience. Just curious ;)

Schenectandy's avatar

@PapaLeo, I’ve really got to read more of his stuff.

@atlantis, Yes, I consider myself to be pretty smart and yet I do plenty of stupid things.

Midnight_Blue's avatar

Unlike beauty, smartness isn’t in the eye of the beholder. Unless you are walking in their shoes you don’t know if they are acting smart or dumb.

Stupid people invariably act smart though as they are sure that they are smart – to then it isn’t an act. Most people don’t know their iq, and so have no baseline.

LasVegasSUCKS's avatar

yes they do dude there people who dosent act stupid???

Val123's avatar

@SirBailey Speaking of stupid 2 hour old babies…when my son was just newborn I heard this outraged scream go up from his room. I went flying in there….and you know the grasping reflex babies are born with—well, he’s grabbed a handful of his own hair and was pulling the crap out of his own hair! He was SOOOOOOO MAD! He was gonna kick some butt if he could figure out who was doing it! LOL!

giulianna's avatar

I think that a smart person doesn’t have to be perfect because being smart doesn’t make you perfect.

Barbs666's avatar

Einstein said “There are two things that are infinite. The universe and human stupidity. I am not sure about the former.”
I tend to agree with him.

Ed7's avatar

Because acting stupid some times is the only way to relax.
