Should I quit my job before I get a new one?

Asked by imagine401 (56points) December 6th, 2006
I hate my cocktailing job- I'm not making enough money, it's far from my home, and some of the clientele is pretty sketchy...should I quit to really force myself to get another job, or wait till I get a new one to quit?

Not in LA. My girlfriend was out of a job for many months because she couldn't find another job. :(

unless you're having a career/personal crisis and need to step back and re-evaluate, always keep your job while you look. money is money, and maybe the negative aspects of it will motivate you more.

If you can afford it, I think quitting is worth it. You'll have more time to focus on getting a new job, and you won't accidentally waste more of your life at a job you hate. Just be prepared to be unemployed for a month or more.

I wouldn't recommend quitting until you have something else lined up. However, your motivation can lie in your state of mind, so start working on your resume, browse job postings on websites such as craigslist.org, and start getting yourself out there. Job hunting can really be a pain, but it can also be exciting!

as my father says, being unemployed makes it harder to find a new job beacause it makes you feel like a loser. (direct quote.)

I tried this little stunt and it blew up in my face, BADLY. I wound up unemployed much, much longer than I had prepared for, even though I have a masters in a high-demand field, I still couldn't find something appropriate. At this point in my life, unless I have some serious cash in the bank to float me, and the job is making me suicidal, I'd stick it out and keep the income until you have an official offer from another employer. Being unemployed does torpedo your confidence when you're going in for other interviwes, and what you'll find is that at somepoint, you'll be so desperate for money, you'll take whatever comes along. This may put you in a much worse position than you started out with. I'm not sure what you're looking for, but while you're looking, try to find a job that provides health insurance...

in my life personally, I have never quit one job without having another to fall back on… example: I worked as a political researcher, applied for a photo technician job. Got hired started working both jobs, eventually quiting the research job. This way you always have a steady flow of income for bills, and life.

Most definately not! you should really make sure that you have a new job first, trust me I know from experiance that it is not a good idea to do that, you will find that your finances get way out of wack, even if your significant other is working it will still put a very large strain on your budget. You get used to living a certain way with your income the way it is and when you mess with that level of income it can really really really screw you up big time. lol trust me when I say that you do not want to do that! What kind of work are you interested in?

The best time to look for a job is when you have a job. The pressure to landing the job isn’t as high – you’re working with a net.

On the other hand, if you’re considering starting a new business, that can be very difficult while working a full time job. Some people try to get “a little bit pregnant” when starting a new business, and frankly, very often this doesn’t end up well.
