Is there any application to better manage the Mac OS X top menu "real estate"?

Asked by rexpresso (922points) June 14th, 2009 from IM

My menu bar looks like this with the Finder… when I’m using apps with more menu options, a lot of things get covered. What do you suggest? I don’t want to lose functionality. Here’s a screenshot. Thanks! http://www.grabup.com/uploads/3cde8938f7061f52598b295f03a3a096.png

Well… I don’t know if there are any apps like that out there but I would recommend making some of your system icons a little smaller, like changing the fast user switching icon, changing the battery icon, and removing some of the menu bar apps that you don’t use all the time, or enable their dock icons.

I will look for an app, however. Unfortunately, though, I think the only solution for you is to change the size of the icons you can and remove some.

You can command drag stuff out of the menu bar. And do you really need the day and month to be displayed? You can just click on the time and it will tell you that info.

There is no app. Take johnpowell’s advice and just remove unnecessary stuff.

Thanks guys, I indeed trimmed to what is actually important for me to keep. Command drag, oh so simple — but still, how do I get stuff back if I want? Here’s what I trimmed the bar to: http://www.grabup.com/uploads/b9d5c9a53ba734cbeea7531d08f33091.png — thanks!

Looks good. You should be able to enable the stuff you dragged off via system preferences. One more thing I would suggest is switch the quick user switching icon to the smaller “Little Man” icon.

@dverhey how do I switch to the Little Man? Thanks.

Go into System Preferences/Accounts/Login Options/ “Enable Fast User Switching” and set to “Icon”

Here’s a screenshot.

Thanks that was perfect. By the way, QuickSnapper… is that automatic, like key combination, select area of screen, get a link in the clipboard? That’s what GrabUp does for me but I like your link best (doesn’t have a page, goes straight to the image). Thanks.

Oh I have a page for quicksnapper, I just don’t like using it as much as the plain page for image sharing. I like to keep it fairly anonymous. Here is the software page for littlesnapper and here is an example of a quicksnapper photo page.

By the way, the image is my desktop. Disregard the weirdness.

Thanks — I like your desktop :-)

@rexpresso – Great name! I know that doesn’t help you but I need to say.

@Bri_L — Thanks so much! First time it is appreciated ;-)

@rexpresso – No way! I laugh every time I read it. I think it is quite clever! But, if your around enough, you’ll see enough of my sense of humor and learn that isn’t the highest of compliments. hehe

@Bri_L, hey don’t be so tough on yourself, if you enjoy yourself, at least some will do too. If you don’t, then none will… so if that’s your sense of humor then just enjoy it a lot! ;-)
