How can I add the lyrics to songs into the metadata in iTunes?

Asked by Mtl_zack (6781points) June 17th, 2009

I’d prefer it if I didn’t have to play each song one by one, as people on forums in my Google search suggested.

If you have a mac I would suggest lyricus. It’s got a pretty good bulk downloader. It got 90% of the songs in my 30GB library.

And I am a metadata nazi. All of my songs have album art, and most have lyrics…

I’m on a Mac, but if you’re on Windows, Lifehacker constantly has articles about new lyrics managers. Check them out.

Here’s a windows app from lifehacker like eponymoushipster suggested.

@dverhey i like that app, but is there no way to have it just troll my library and auto add? or am i missing something?

Mtl_zack's avatar

Sorry, I forgot to mention I’m on a mac.
@eponymoushipster , that’s exactly what I need.

DeanV's avatar

Yeah. At the top corner of the app there should be two buttons. Click on the one on the right and it should be titled the “Lyricus Bulk Downloader”. There will then be a selection on the left for “Selected Tracks”. Select all of your tracks, select the selected tracks option, and hit go. Messages will show up on the right side.

Sorry for the somewhat vague response. Most computer literate people could figure it out once they find the button, though.

@dverhey Oh neat! This is kickass!! :D Lurve all around!

DeanV's avatar

No problem. Glad I could help.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@dverhey i’m computer literate. i just spent approximately .5sec looking at it before i typed that second question.

eponymoushipster's avatar

BTW, with the bulk downloader, you should Cmd+A your library window in iTunes.

DeanV's avatar

Yeah. It had the ability to get whole playlists until the last iTunes update. At least it still gets the lyrics.

You have to select your whole library.

eponymoushipster's avatar

ok, this mac program didn’t really impress. it only found like 58% of my library. and not just really obscure stuff, fairly mainstream stuff.

i mean, it couldn’t find any “Apples In Stereo” lyrics? c’mon.

and yes, i had all three lyrics sites selected.

DeanV's avatar

Hmm. Ah well. Can’t help you there.

eponymoushipster's avatar

yeah, i know. i was just reporting in. :)

DeanV's avatar

What about this? Another lyricsfetcher with bulk download capability.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@dverhey link to product is dead in that article. it’s from 3+ years ago.

DeanV's avatar

Well damn. That’s all i’ve got for bulk stuff. But 58% with lyrics is better than nothing.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@dverhey true. thanks! i googled it, the most recent update was 2007 on the apple site. it was advertised to work with itunes 7.2 or something. lol. a bit behind the times.

DeanV's avatar

I will continue looking. I’ve got time on my hands. Shame that Lyricus app didn’t work for you.

EDIT: Many of the apps I have found have taken lyrics from the same sites lyricus does. So I don’t think other apps could do much better.

Still weird it could find lyrics for my swiss rap music but not your Apples In Stereo…

Mtl_zack's avatar

I got like 70% of my songs filled but then I selected only the remaining songs that needed to be filled and it filled those more easily.

DeanV's avatar

Yeah. I would recommend running it a second time. Sometimes it gets them that time.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Mtl_zack good suggestion. thanks!

All you guys are now my HEROES!

Randy's avatar

Wow… It only found 1.99% of the lyrics in my library.

DeanV's avatar

Wow. What do you listen to?

Or are your songs tagged right?

Randy's avatar

They are tagged right. I’ve found that I have to let it do small portions at a time. It seems to work then. It takes a little more time but it’s better than manually finding all the lyrics or having to type them in.
