Unlocking an iPhone EDGE (1st gen)?
I am probably going to get a cheap iPhone EDGE to use on T-Mobile. I want to play around with it. However, I’m buying it for cheap and it’s not unlocked.
How do I unlock it to use with t-mobile? all the unlocking solutions I see out there look sketchy or are REALLY expensive. Any help here?

Unlocking your iPhone is “sketchy” and not supported by Apple. You must jailbreak it first.
Wikipedia has a short list of available mainstream tools.
Looks like redsn0w is a good first place to visit.

Yeah I know but I’m just worried about someone scamming me out of my money with “iphone unlocking” claims.
My question is, once I jailbreak and unlock, can I un-jailbreak and my phone will still be unlocked? And what jailbreaking tool is best for 1gen? I’ve tried to look but all the stuff out there is for the 3G iPhone and I don’t have that. I don’t want to brick the phone.
Risk of bricking the phone is inherent to the process. Obviously the pwnage folks try to minimize that, but the only thing that approaches a guarantee is to not deviate from Apple’s supported configuration/usage.
Redsn0w is capable of unlocking your original iPhone:

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS).

I’ve never unlocked an iPhone personally. But yes, I’d like to think that you should be able to un-jailbreak and keep the phone unlocked. But I really just don’t know.
I just looked at Redsn0w from your previous answer and it seems like a solid solution. :) Thanks so much. I just want to get this unlocked on t-mobile so I can toy around with it.
You cannot mess up your iPhone doing the jailbreak or unlock process. You can always recover your phone if something messes up, just put your phone in DFU and restore.
Anything from the dev-team is pretty rock solid for modifying your iPhone. And redsnow works great for jail breaking. Just read up on their blog to make sure you understand everything about it.
You can get from the service provider..
You can try to unlock your iPhone through remote unlocking method. This method of unlocking is affordable and safer. You can get the remote unlocking from http://www.Wickedunlock.com/ for very low cost. Unlocking is very easy and you will get step by step guidance on unlocking process.
