Does this response by Benazir Bhutto, make you question our foreign policy?
Despite the corrosion of her reputation by corruption and compromise, Bhutto appears to be America’s strongest anchor in the effort to turn back the extremist Islamic tide threatening to engulf Pakistan. What would you like to tell President Bush? I ask this riddle of a woman.
She would tell him, she replies, that propping up Musharraf’s government, which is infested with radical Islamists, is only hastening disaster. “I would say, ‘Your policy of supporting dictatorship is breaking up my country.’ I now think al-Qaeda can be marching on Islamabad in two to four years.”

Consider 2 of the most powerful countries in that region, both armed with nuclear weapons and friends of the US. Also very intolerant of each other, and would use nuclear weapons in contest with their neighbor, if it were to escalate. The current situation between the 2 countries has become more stable during Musharraf’s government. Bhutto although she was the most capable of continuing in a peaceful manner left Pakistan because of corruption something that has been going on in her family and in Pakistan for a very long time. To blame someone else for the corruption in her country is expected. Though in light of the fact that not only does the government need to continue working on relations with that of a legitimate country neighbor it must also contend with an uninvited foreign presence from a group with no country and only violence as their agenda.
It is unfortunate that we will not get the chance to see if Bhutto could have made a difference. I can say that, without US involvement Bhutto would still be in exile and AL Quaida would probably be running Pakistan now.
Some people believe that America should not be involved with other countries and should mind it’s own business. Just like some people turn a deaf ear as their neighbor beats their wife and kids.
On a lighter note, who do you think is going to answer all those phone calls to the help desks, if India and Pakistan go at it. :)
