Is there a way to recover a Windows 7 login password?

Asked by sketchstudios (87points) July 1st, 2009 from iPhone

I have a friend who needs to login to her newly purchased laptop with Windows 7 installed on it but the person she bought it from didn’t supply the password. I tried the Ophcrack technique but it doesn’t work for Windows 7. Does anyone know of a way to retrieve the password?

I was going to suggest Ophcrack, but then I saw your details. Sorry.

What about the Trinity Rescue Kit?

Or tracking down the person she bought it from (unless they stole it and thus don’t have the password)?

Windows 7 is not out for distribution. What this means is that the computer she bought was from a tech geek who is beta-testing Windows 7; in which case she needs to speak to the seller again to get the password. If he doesn’t know the password, it is likely she bought a computer stolen from a tech-geek.

Windows 7 will be disabled from Microsoft next year on June 10, 2010. This means that she will have to go out and buy the full version at that time, if Microsoft has it ready.

I say all this to say – just download Windows 7 and reinstall and reformat the hard drive instead of going through all that headache. It’s like trying to lockpick 3 deadbolts on a door when you could just burn the door down and put up a new one.

The download is legal, provided by Microsoft.

The vista version of Ophcrack did not work on the Acer laptop I’m trying to resurrect. Apparently the free version contains a limited number of hash tables, and if you want ALL the rainbow tables, that’ll cost you $999US.
With TRK, however, I was able to clear the passwords and access the hiddne Administrator account.
Thanks, loads, darwin!!!

You can create a Windows password reset disk to recover your windows 7 password. Follow this 5 easy steps:

1. Enter a computer that can link to Internet. Google Windows Password Recovery 6.0 for password recovery. Download and install the software on that computer.

2. Run the software and create windows password recovery disk by follow the instructions.

3. Eject the created CD/DVD and insert it into the locked computer.

4. Reboot the locked computer (it’s necessary for you to change your locked computer’s BIOS setting to make it boot from CD drive) and then follow the instructions to reset your password.

5. Now login Windows and set a new password.
