After watching the die in video on CNN, I understand what the issue is now.

People are protesting the Mayor’s decision regarding HIV research funding.

I don’t see the humor in that.

The phrase used is a little odd, but not necessarily funny. I probably would have called it something else…

What do you mean by funny? It would take a very odd sense of humor indeed to find the likely deaths of many people due to decreased HIV funding amusing.

It’s simply a play on words as imagined by the protesters themselves. It’s not intended to be ha-ha funny. It’s meant to be tragic and memorable.

Is it similar to the sit-in movement? Except they take it to the extreme situation, the “Die-in” protesting something they apparently believe so strongly in to die. I guess it’s not really hilarious, but yea…
