Is it possible to alter the directions from the google maps api?

I would like to be able to specify quickest route, shortest route, cheapest, etc. using the google maps api.

Is this be possible?

Like a GPS’s “most use of freeways” option? I don’t know if this is native to the Google Maps API. But I’m not sure.
