Depends on the person. My mom makes terrible decisions but it is easy to put myself in her shoes and understand why she made the decision she did. I know her well and understand some of the stuff that has led up to the bad decision.

And then we have David Duke who I can’t ever imagine having any compassion for or understanding of.

Working as an actor and as a lawyer has helped as this is an important skill for those professions.

There was an excellent German movie a couple of years ago, the name of it escapes me, about Hitler’s last days in the Berlin bunker. The actor playing Hitler was amazing. In an interview he said he did not wish to talk about preparing for that role, as “putting on that person” was a dangerous and unpleasant experience. I have found that there is some logic, twisted as it may be, to the thought processes of just about everyone, if you can find the factors that have led to creating who that person is.
