What artists would you suggest for this type of person?

Asked by Tink (8673points) July 11th, 2009 from iPhone

My 10 year old sister.
Right now she listens to that Disney shit. Ugh
I’ve tried to show her some of the music I like but she doesn’t like it.
When she does hear rock she prefers hard screaming type of music.
I don’t really know alot so I turned to Fluther for help

Why are you asking? Are you trying to turn her musical preferences around?

I’d just leave it be. She’s only ten. It’s not like she’ll be listening to Miley Cyrus/The Jonas Brothers forever. She has plenty of time to cultivate her artistic tastes.

Tink's avatar

She wants to know more music, she asked me to do this for her since she can’t have a fluther account

willbrawn's avatar

Try iTunes genius. It will give similar songs for a type of genre.

Tink's avatar

Tried that, but she wants more

willbrawn's avatar

@Tink1113 tell her to not be greedy lol

MacBean's avatar

Can you tell us some of the specific bands/artists she likes other than “that Disney shit”?

Randy's avatar

How about Norma Jean?

I wouldn’t recommend them to most 10 year olds because I don’t think a 10 year old would have the same definition of hard screaming I do, but what the hey… Maybe she’ll dig it.

peyton_farquhar's avatar

Hmmmm. Then I would have to recommend the mass-marketed-consumer-driven-techno-pop of my childhood: Britney Spears, NSync, and the Backstreet Boys. Its the only stuff I can think of that really approximates the style and quality of Disney’s music.

As I’ve mentioned before on Fluther, my nine year old daughter is crazy for The Beatles. She also loves The Electric Light Orchestra and Queen. All these bands utilize a lot of production and many songs have a catchy pop sound, so she might dig some of that.

Get her a radio and have her tune to several different stations until she finds stuff she likes. That’s what I did with my kids, although I also force them to listen to NPR when they ride in my truck.

Tink's avatar

Here are some of her favorites
Kilswitch Engage
Rage Against the Machine
Marylin Manson
Devil Wears Prada
Disturbed
Scary Kids Scaring Kids
Likes some ELO but not crazy for the Beatles

peyton_farquhar's avatar

@Darwin: my Dad and I always listened to NPR on the long drive to school when I was a kid. Lurve.

tyrantxseries's avatar

You let a 10yr old listen to Marylin Manson,Rage Against the Machine and Disturbed ? Seriously?

Tink's avatar

Yeah, her taste

eambos's avatar

@AstroChuck‘s daughter has awesome taste in music! Did she get that from her father?

irocktheworld's avatar

Maybe you should try to let her to listen to all your music and see what she likes…:P

Tink's avatar

She likes some but not all cuz she likes hard rock and I don’t really

irocktheworld's avatar

oohh ok is hard rock the only type of music she likes?

Tink's avatar

Nope, Disney stuff and some indie, but lots of hard rock

Darwin's avatar

Get her a radio, as I said above. She can cruise the dial and find what she likes.

tyrantxseries's avatar

How about some Eminem, Korn, GRAW, I bet she’d love them…

irocktheworld's avatar

@Tink1113 Hmmm..well like Darwin said, you should get a radio and go through the
stations and see what she likes and maybe she may change her mind

cyn's avatar

@Tink1113 rock wave.
remember that list i made
this

Tink's avatar

Hi.
Uhm I’m Stephanie, I want music for my iPod, I have a favorite station but just want more music and it’s confusing cuz when I hear one on the radio I don’t know the name of it and I’m like uhh
And I don’t like rap either, too much talk about nasty stuff in most of the song there

cyn's avatar

@Tink1113 is that your sister? I agree with her about the whole rap thing :)

irocktheworld's avatar

@cyndihugs yeah same with me lol

Tink's avatar

Yeah thats her :)
I feel that way too

Darwin's avatar

She needs to listen to the radio more closely – the DJ will say the name of the performer eventually.

cyn's avatar

I agree with @Darwin

Tink's avatar

@Darwin Yeah she read this whole QnA and thought it was a good idea, she said thank you, and to give you all some lurve :)

Darwin's avatar

Back at her!

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

She’s 10. If she likes Disney music why not? Certainly it’s not my thing.

I’d just go on sharing what music you like with her but don’t force it on her.
She’ll eventually explore different music.

Tink's avatar

I don’t force it she asked me, what other music would be good for her to listen too

jonsblond's avatar

I’d suggest Foo Fighters, Cake, Weezer, The Killers and Johnny Cash.

ubersiren's avatar

I’m sure our parents and older siblings cringed when we listened to New Kids on the Block. Maybe the thing to do is to play sort of your own version of School of Rock. Teach her the classics first and give her lessons in music appreciation about why certain music is of value, and other is the Wal-Mart brand.

Maybe slowly progress to the stuff you like. In a pattern such as this:

Miley Cyrus > Avril Lavigne > Smashmouth > Fallout Boy > They Might Be Giants > The White Stripes > Weezer > Ben Folds > The Flaming Lips > Modest Mouse > Radiohead—>

@jonsblond : Great suggestions.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

The Foo Fighters have a melodic but relatively complex rhythm structure for most songs while also showing intricate lyrics and a dominant male vocalist.

elijah's avatar

My daughter likes the Disney artists (I don’t mind them honestly) and she also listens to Paramore, No Doubt, Hot Hot Heat, Motion City Soundtrack, Head Automatica, Sugarcult, Boys Like Girls. Those rock bands you listed are very mainstream radio bands. people still like Marilyn Manson? Really? Rage is good though. Devil Wears Prada and Scary Kids are very Hot Topic type music. She would probably like that kind of emo/screamo music. Try Senses Fail, Drop Dead Gorgous, Silverstein, Allisana, Circa Survive, Funeral For A Friend, Alexisonfire, Nora, and if she’s willing to try something a bit different you can suggest At the Drive-In or Coheed and Cambria.

Tink's avatar

@elijah Hehe alot of those artist are on my iPod right now :)
I know Marylin Manson, pft she’s a wild child ;)

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i don’t really have any suggestions that weren’t already listed (good charlotte, maybe? i don’t know.) but i love that she’s 10 and her tastes vary from the jonas brothers to marilyn manson. i want to give her a high five just for having such a big variation there haha.

Tink's avatar

Yes she’s weird like that

Clair's avatar

Her taste or not, this is just awful music….
but I suppose I listened to a little of the same crap when I was ten. I’d just give it time and suggest new things to her as often as she will consider them. Totally go outside of the box and try some crazy stuff.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

@Clair that’s remarkably suggestive, though I’m not particularly a fan of most of the bands mentioned I could give you a good argument how they’re just as good or just as ‘awful’ as you’re favorite genre. One of the only pet peeves I have is when people call music awful. to you perhaps, but plenty of people love it.

Clair's avatar

@ABoyNamedBoobs03 No, I agree, it is suggestive. And that’s great for her age group and interests, I’m sure. I’m not being pretentious. But it seems that the majority of people on this thread also think it’s not great music. I could also give that same argument and I’m not a fan of people judging others or other’s tastes but…it’s pretty awful. But it’s their taste and that’s great!

MilkyWay's avatar

how about linkin park or 30 seconds to mars?.... i think she’ll like them…
