Asked by Tink (8673points) July 15th, 2009 from iPhone

Ok so here it is, when I post links and I go to them it takes me to the website and says 404 error URL not found or something like that, here’s an example
Does anyone know why this happens? And if it helps I’m using an iPod touch 2ng gen.

@Tink1113, the “404” message you’re seeing is generated by the server hosting the web site you’re trying to hit. It’s not a message generated by your iPod touch nor by its builtin Mobile Safari web browser.

The W3C maintains a comprehensive listing of those HTTP Status Messages. Basically, if you see some kind of number leading off the error message, your first assumptions would be that:
– you are connected to the network
– your web browser is able to connect to the web site’s server
– the server is reporting a problem back to you

404 = file not found. That’s the server’s way of saying that the link you’re following is bad. You might not be the one who messed it up. Could be the site’s developer screwed up his code so that when you go to do something – like post links – that he’s accidentally telling your browser to do the wrong thing.

Server-side messages, like these, are generally out of your control unless you’re the person crafting the url.

@robmandu So it’s not my fault?

Probably not. Unless you manually typed in a url, like: http : //www.wherever.com/filename_that_does_not_exist.html.

BTW, the site’s administrators can override the default HTTP Status message and replace it with something better, sparklier, and more user-friendly. For example, here is Fluther’s 404 message.

Yeah I type it cause I don’t have the copy and paste, but I double check and it’s the right one
