Do I have too much light for my fish tank?

Asked by Tetario (2points) July 16th, 2009

I’ve got a 55 gallon freshwater African Cichlid tank that I’m lighting with the GLO T5 HO Fluorescent Fixture with the Life-GLO and Power-GLO bulbs. Meaning I have 2 lights totalling 108W, 24700 K light. Is this too much?

Just make sure the water’s the right temperature (aka the lights aren’t heating the tank too much), and remember to turn the lights off at night. Fish have circadian cycles, too. :)

It’s SWEET that you’re keeping cichlids, btw!

If it’s a fish-only tank, you want 1–2 watts/gal; so you’re at the high side of that range, but probably not enough to cause algae problems. If you have live plants, that’s probably not enough for the plants; they’ll want 2½ -3 watts/gal.

That’s also a very blue light, which doesn’t flatter warmer colors in your fish, but that’s more an aesthetic consideration.

Hell dude, Not sure about the fish but that would make one hell of a cloning bed. ;)

Yea, your fine with light, but as Harp said thats really friggin blue. You didnt happen to add the Kelvin ratings on those two bulbs together to arrive at that number did you? I dont think ive ever seen a T5 light over 20k at my work.
