Where is the best place to go to Spanish language school in Central or South America?
I want to go back to Spanish language school. Somewhere relatively inexpensive, preferably near sweet beaches or somewhere to swim. I already did the Xela, Guatemala thing so something different. Please tell me names of cities and schools.

Central, because that’s where Mexico is.
How proficient is your Spanish, and how long to you want to go for?
I want to do that too! My Niece is the editor of Think Spanish magazine. She has a link on her website with study abroad recommendations. She is very nice. You can click the “contact us” link on her website and ask about recommendations if you want. She will know who the best of the best is.
@pandora: my spanish is pretty good. I can get around easily with it but I want to become fluent.
@Judi—thanks!
I don’t have the name of the school so this might not be specific enough for you, but my nephew went to Costa Rica to an intensive program and had a fabulous time. I’ve been to Costa Rica too and it’s a great country; great people and nature, lovely beaches, easy to be in.
If you need more info, I could possibly get the name of the school from him but I’m sure there are several.
I have heard it said, that the best places to get a nice South American Spanish accent are in Colombia, Peru and Argentina.
@emilyrose: Well, first of all, are you in high school, college, are you beyond those?
@lilgiraffe: The accents heard in those regions are all completely different! And what accent isn’t nice? Also, Colombia is dangerous, a lot of US universities (including mine) don’t permit their students to go there. So, it might not be the best choice for her…
@La_chica_gomela—HA HA! I am 29 : ) Funny how on fluther you won’t always know such things. I would prefer to go somewhere with students around my age if possible. Also, I have to say that I just spent two weeks in Colombia and had a great time and I’d like to go back. The country has a bad reputation, and for good reason. But, I’d have to say that if you go and stick to touristy areas, I have not heard of anyone having any problems. I did not feel any less safe in Colombia than I did in any other part of Latin America, and I’ve spent 5 months or more traveling through various countries in Central and South America. Actually, hate to say it but Costa Rica was one of the worst because it felt like everyone was trying to rob me!
Ideally I would go to language school in Argentina. I’ve been looking at Buenos Aires but it’s expensive. Any other nice towns in Argentina that are more affordable where I could seek out a school? Coastal would be amazing….........
I’d recommend the city of Mar de Plata in Argentina. It’s a big domestic tourist attraction, but it seems to have a lot of the features you’re looking for. Can’t say I know what language schools are there, but it’s worth checking out. Also see the PM I wrote you.
