How can I get the best Internet connection in a place that isn't wired for it?

Asked by Judi (40025points) July 19th, 2009

I am going to temporarily move into a place where the phone company doesn’t have ISDN, and there is no cable. I stayed there about 5 years ago and had satellite and it was really slow and they ended charging us an arm and a leg when we went to cancel it. Should I just be happy I have an iPhone and skip trying to get Internet out there or is there something new in the last 5 years that I don’t know about? My geek level is way way low so I don’t know a lot about this stuff.

yeah, dsl. works over standard phone lines.

I think that’s what I meant to say instead of ISDN. (I told you my geek level was low.) When we tried DSL last time they said they didn’t do DSL in that area. Maybe they have upgraded by now but I doubt it.

Wouldn’t hurt to check.

I will check. Just wondering if there was anything else out there. I may be there a year and I really am addicted o this Internet stuff.

Buy tethering internet for your iPhone. Is that out on AT&T yet? I’ve been enjoying it in the UK for a while now.

Duh. Went back and read the question.

Never mind.

I’m not sure if anyone would want to get tangled up with bith AT&T and Verizon, but if you’re in the coverage area, here is an idea:

You make your own wireless hotspot.

Actually, I still have my verizon phone, even though I have the iPhone. I just haven’t gotten around to canceling it yet. maybe I’ll wait a bit.

You might check around to see what has changed. We have a relatively new company in our area called Clearwire that provides wireless Internet. In essence, it broadcasts the Internet connection to a specialized wireless modem. You can then hook the modem directly to your computer or run it to a router and hook up or broadcast to multiple computers.

It’s possible, from what you say, that you’re moving to a remote area that has crappy DSL signal (which DSL is notorious for). Another thing to look into, if DSL is available, is whether they have a one year contract.

All else failing, if you get cell phone signal, you can get a laptop cellular card (as has been suggested). Might be a bit spendy.

Edit: Oh! The link that @noelasun suggested is perfect, and I don’t think you even need a verizon cellular plan.

Edit: No, I lied. You do need it.

Have you tried scouting your neighborhood to see if there are any unemcrypted will fi networks you can piggyback onto. I don’t know if you have a of or mac. If it’s a mac there is a free thing called coconut will fi which scans for surrounding networks. Green indicates unencrypted so you don’t need a password to use it.

I only suggest this because you don’t have evil hacking intentions and it’s the other persons responsibility to password protect their network.

If they don’t do it then I assume they want to share with their neighbors. :)
