Allergy sufferers, do the insides of your ears itch?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12594points) July 21st, 2009

Mine do, but I never hear people talk about it. Is it common?

All. The. Time. Ugh. It’s one of the reasons I’m still using q-tips years after knowing I shouldn’t be!

OMG! Yes!!! Drives me crazy!

And my eyes have been watering for the past couple of weeks and I have been basically crying everywhere I go…bad allergy season!

My ears always itch but I thought it was from listening to my iPod too much!

Yes… they’ll itch first, and the sneezing follows! I find that allergy medicine that has the decongestant is the best releif.

Mine tighten up and I get this feeling of pressure inside. I’m told it’s my eustachean tubes closing up due to allergies. I et taht more often than I get the sneezes and the itchy eyes.

Eustachianitis. The little tubes that run from your ears to your throat. That’s what’s inflamed and itching. The remedy is Sudafed – the kind you have to show your driver’s license to get – and lots of liquids. Hot tea with lemon gives me a little relief.

I have psoriasis in my ears. Very annoying.

Yes! And for some reason, pushing my tongue on the back roof of my mouth and rubbing helps, it like, itches my ears.

@casheroo I scratch my ears with my tongue, too! Used to drive my ex crazy… “How can you possibly scratch your ears with your tongue?!?” I don’t know… but it definitely helps. :)

@casheroo and @augustlan: It works, for sure! Doing that moves the soft palate around and rubs it against the pharynx where the Eustachian tube opens.

@janbb and @IchtheosaurusRex and everyone: The Valsalva maneuver helps restore the pressure to normal. And Mack’s Ear Dryer feels gooooood too!

@casheroo & @augustlan: I do that too! But usually my throat itches when my ears, so I always just assumed I was itching my throat. Interesting tidbit @hearkat! That “maneuver” (didn’t know it had a name) is what my ENT told me to do, too, but I hate doing it! It hurts! :-(

@All: Thanks for your answers! Still itching, but now I don’t feel alone anymore! :-D

rooeytoo's avatar

@augustlan – you can’t mean you literally scratch your ears with your tongue. Even that guy you used to sing with Kiss probably couldn’t do that. What do you mean???

augustlan's avatar

@rooeytoo Haha… I wish my tongue were that long! I use my tongue to ‘scratch’ my ears from inside my mouth. You just kind of forcefully move your tongue back and forth on the roof/sides of your mouth, near the upper back corners.

casheroo's avatar

@rooeytoo lol, I do what @augustlan does…pushing my tongue on the roof of my mouth. It helps relieve my itchy ears! I thought I was a freak, yay for others that do it!

rooeytoo's avatar

Well that is a relief to hear, the mental image of you all scratching your ears externally with your tongues was pretty astounding!

I never heard or thought of doing it internally, but next time I get a case of itchy ears, I will give it a try!

Thanks for the tip.

@La_chica_gomela: You may be “blowing” too hard. It is best to start with minimal pressure, then gradually increase until you feel the ears pop. Being too forceful, even when blowing your nose, can cause problems.
