Was that Jupiter-- low in the eastern night sky on Friday and Saturday?

Asked by breedmitch (12171points) July 21st, 2009

This past weekend there was a very bright (for NYC standards) planet in the eastern night sky. It caught my attention on Friday because it was centered so perfectly over our patio. Then I noticed it again on Saturday, but higher and to the right.

I ask because Jupiter has been in the news so recently.

Also, is there a website that might regularly have information such as this?

Yep, that’s Jupiter.
This map represents the view of NYC’s Southeastern horizon at 11PM last Saturday. Jupiter is the brown circle (the other planets shown, Uranus and Neptune, would have been too dim to see).

Non can’t wait to hear what it was tho , shame it wasn’t recorded would have thought someone had known it was going to happen…

No one knew that a comet or meteor was perhaps going to strike Jupiter. The photographic evidence was noted however.

“The dark mark, which appeared suddenly between July 17th and 19th, has been confirmed by many other observers at different locations.”

Read all about it.

Only if Milo doesn’t mind you ignoring his majesty for a moment more.

Dear dear Harold; After having caught 20 mice (and eaten only one, leaving the teeny feet and legs behind), Milo has been amply rewarded with cheese and tuna juice.
