Costa Rican law is very friendly to American purchase of real estate and the process is as secure as it gets for Central America. There are firms down there that specialize in facilitating this process. One guy I talked to built a house on land along the coast south of Manuel Antonio.

Another American I talked to who was younger (20s or 30s) had a Costa Rican wife and lived there FT. he wasn’t wealthy (I surmised) and talked about how it wasn’t that easy and he had to keep a lot of irons in the fire to stay afloat. It sounded like he did real estate referrals and sold crafts among other things.

I don’t think CR is too friendly to Americans being hired for jobs, since it diminishes local employment, but the owners of Costa Verde resort are American, and they’re probably as wealthy as anyone down there.

You probably know this, but tourist/vacation prices seemed to be about ⅔ of American prices. “Local” prices are much cheaper I’m sure.

I’m not sure whether you can stay in the country full-time, so that’s something to check out as well.

You could build a ecolodge and live there like my aunt. :)
