Which apt would you choose to move in to?

Asked by amoreno06 (363points) July 22nd, 2009

I’m moving out.
I have a choice of either
APT A- a tiny two bedroom apt. It looks dirty to me but is walking distance to school. Has coin washer and drier right across the apt, you don’t even have to step outside 975/month. or
APT B- a HUGE 1 bdrm apt with washer and dryer in the unit, but I’d have to commute…but the apt is brand newish. 850/month

utilities are not included in either.
no parking available at apt A
parking is available for 40/year at apt B
i will have a car.
i will be moving out with my boyfriend.
Which would you choose?

With B- How would you have to commute? What would the costs of commuting be? Is your boyfriend also in school? If it is a one bedroom, is this enough space for both of your belongings? Where will school work be done?

With A- It sounds like you don’t like the apartment. If you don’t like it now, it won’t grow on you either. You’ll become miserable there, and miserable with your situation.

I’d go with the one that is cheapest, and you like the most.

how far is the commute? I would travel for a nicer place and parking. I do live in NYC, however, and I can’t afford to have the option of living in squalor but being walking distance to everything

B. If the commute isn’t that far then you could bike there for some exercise

noelasun's avatar

Take the “no parking” into serious consideration! Nothing is more irritating than FINALLY getting home and then having no place to park!

basp's avatar

I’m with the others that say if the commute isn’t bad go for B.

amoreno06's avatar

According to google maps, it would take about 30 mins walking and about 15 minutes by car.

Facade's avatar

That’s not bad at all. And you said you’d be living with you bf? Yall can divide the rent and stuff :)

basp's avatar

15 minutes!!
That isn’t a commute! I’m used to an hour or more!

Go for it!

amoreno06's avatar

That’s what we’re planning on doing.
I’m just having major doubts about moving in with someone.
To a neighborhood that I’m not too thrilled about.
But I was thinking, I’m usually not outside anyways.
If i want to be, I’ll just take the EL to lake michigan or something.

noelasun's avatar

@amoreno06 are there any other choices at all?
If you’re having doubts about moving in with someone, two rooms may be a better way to go to start.

Apt. B sounds more appealing, plus it’s cheaper. I’d go with B.

Sarcasm's avatar

edit: Whoops, got the 2 mixed up.

Definitely pick B. $40 parking isn’t bad (that’s what I pay for my college). Cheaper, better. 15-minute commute is nothing (I’ve been doing 70-minute commutes the past 4 semesters for college, 3–4 days a week)

Capt_Bloth's avatar

I agree with @basp 15 minutes doesn’t count as a commute

EmpressPixie's avatar

B. A bigger bedroom and generally nicer place for less is so very worth a commute. The parking spot pays for itself in about a third of a month compared to the other place.

amoreno06's avatar

we saw some other places, but finally narrowed it down to these two.
he’s giving me the option to choose. he doesn’t really care either way.
I just don’t think being cramped in two tiny bedrooms is good.

amoreno06's avatar

ok.
THANK YOU GUYS SOOOO MUCH!!!
There really is no other way to show my appreciation than in writing in all caps lock with a million exclamation points!
You guys have made me feel so much better about this all.
I feel like I’m going through it all alone but you guys have reassured me apt B is the better choice!
@Sarcasm the parking is in the front if there are no cars and there’s also available parking right outside the door (we’re closer to the alley) if no one is there. so we can have parking in the front or back. whatever is available at the time.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

Late to the party but I’d choose B and snap up the parking option, split the cost with your bf and each of you share the space.

autumn43's avatar

B!!!! B!!!! B!!!! It sounds perfect – price, laundry, parking.

B is totally the winner, no question. If I was looking at apts. (instead of owning a home) I would take that one, it has all the basics I’d require AND a better price Please ask us decorating questions once you move in. :)

amoreno06's avatar

i definitely will!
my bf’s moving in this Monday but i won’t get to till next weekend because i work all next week.
I’ll take pics!

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i’m going for B.
i have movin’ out by billy joel intensely stuck in my head now…! (:

Jeruba's avatar

A little commute for a new, clean, spacious place with reserved parking and lower rent? B is the winner all around, unless you actually need 2 bedrooms.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

I’ve always been the type of person to choose APT A. Right now my commute is 1.25 hours (not my choice) and it’s miserable.

Judi's avatar

How’s the parking at school? (Did you mean $40.00 for parking at school but no extra charge for parking at your apartment?)

amoreno06's avatar

no, 40/yr for parking around my apt.
parking at school would be extra.
and i just realized…the bedroom has no windows. just a small square of glass blocks the kind used for showers.
i don’t think there’s any type of ventilation in that room.
oh man.
i’m doubting myself again…
isn’t there like, a three day rule to where you can break contract?

Judi's avatar

What state are you in?

EmpressPixie's avatar

As in Chicago? Because that is a SERIOUSLY good parking deal ‘round these parts.

amoreno06's avatar

yea, in chicago.
i’ll be going to UIC so i’m not sure how parking is near the school. i’ll probably have to pay a lot for a permit there.

jonsblond's avatar

How can a bedroom not have a window that opens? That sucks! :(

EmpressPixie's avatar

I live in Chicago. DO THE COMMUTE. I mean, come on! You can get anywhere super fast. I commute from Ravenswood to the Loop daily. Or did when I was employed. My boyfriend’s roommate used to commute from Ravenswood to Hyde Park daily. Do the commute! It is SO worth a better apartment. Especially here.

Jeruba's avatar

No ventilation in B? Really? I think you need to look at apartment C.

Sarcasm's avatar

Get a window AC unit and/or a standing fan. Ventilation solved.

Jeruba's avatar

She said there’s no window.

casheroo's avatar

A bedroom without a window is against code, it’s a violation of some sort…so I don’t think it can even be considered a bedroom.

EmpressPixie's avatar

It has a window. It’s got funky windows, but that’s the kind of window my boyfriend’s place has for the most part.

Val123's avatar

B. And WHERE do you live???? Those rents are astronomical!
