Know of Any "Good" Psychology Masters Programs?

Asked by badapple (198points) July 22nd, 2009

I have a bachelors in Psychology and this is my “safe” career option since my hobbies won’t really pay the bills at this point.

That being said, I’ve considered school psychology, clinical, and possibly even med school for psychiatry.

Does anyone else have any opinions regarding master degrees in psychology? Anybody hated a program or just couldn’t find a job in a particular field?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have no information for you, sorry. But I am going to go into clinical psychology, get my masters and possibly a PHD (like psychiatry, maybe I’m not sure yet).

I’d suggest getting a copy of this (link) and perusing it for a couple days. It’s a great resource for finding what programs are offered where, acceptance rates, requirements, what scholarships are available, etc, etc.

The edition I linked to (2010) comes out August 15th with a preorder price of $19.11 for the soon-to-be strapped for cash student.

Edit: Forgot to mention: this handy manual is good for american universities only.

Here’s another option for you: Clinical Social Work. If you’re interested in practicing psychotherapy privately or working in a psychiatric clinic or hospital. The approach is somewhat different than that of psychology (systemic), but the training is “hands on” and less research-oriented. The two best programs in the US are the so-called “Block” programs at Smith in Massachusetts, and at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in NYC. Best of luck!

Thanks so much everyone!

@StephK, I’ll make sure to pick up a copy.

@littlewesternwoman I haven’t considered that before but being that I am not interested in doing heavy reserach… that would definitely be an option.

@desiree333 – Are you looking to go into the PsyD or Phd program for Clinical psych? Either way just make sure the University is APA accredited as some states don’t license psychologists that do not have a degree from an accredited school

@badapple I am looking to go into PsyD for clinical psychology. Thanks I’ll make sure my university is APA credited :), I’m like almost 100% sure it is though anyways.
