Did Vietnam ever turn into the terrible threat to global security and a menace to the free world, that America insinuated in the 60's...

Why isn’t Vietnam discussed anymore in that light?

What do you think? Vietnam is now one of the world’s biggest coffee producers. We cannot afford to insult them.

Because American views on foreign policy have changed. Even Robert McNamara realized his mistake in being so hawkish on Vietnam.

My concern with Viet Nam isn’t the lasting political effect of that war, but the treatment of returning veterans by the media and more importantly, the liberal Jane Fonda types. These men and women sacrificed for their country, and then to return home to be called ‘baby killers’ and such is incomprehensible.

War is never pretty, and oftentimes it should be avoided if possible, but to attack the returning vets for the policies of their superiors is fucking stupid. All military vets deserve our appreciation and gratitude, not just the ones we see fighting a ‘just’ war.

My daughter lived in Vietnam for nearly a year. They treated her like a movie star. (not a lot of ultra white red heads there.) She was there while Fidel Castro and Bill Clinton were both visiting. She left because of SARS.

The Vietnam War was fought from ‘59 to ‘75. The U.S. starting sending military “advisors” in the ‘50’s and actual combat troops in ‘65.

I’ve got to think that a protracted (somewhat) civil war and larger military conflict over the span of 16 years probably had a negative effect on many of Vietnam’s larger and more aggressive expansion goals.

The Domino Theory has since been thoroughly discredited. In fact, many of the dreaded Communist threats have become more and more capitalistic over time.

The theory was original put forth by Eisenhower as a result of what he and Winston Churchhill saw happen in eastern Europe after World War II, when the USSR began gathering multiple countries into its fold. It was used as justification for the US to intervene throughout the world.

However, the Berlin Wall has fallen, the USSR is no more, and even China is becoming more and more capitalistic, so the theory has been disproven. Vietnam is not discussed as a global threat because it isn’t one.

North Korea, OTOH, has the capability and mind-set to do some damage to other countries, however.

Ok some informed responces…so the threat of impending menace with regards to the domino theory et cetera… Failed to materialise

So, are informed responses a problem for you?

@Darwin If usa, japan and s.korea continue to squeeze n.korea’s testicles, then an unfriendly reaction could ensue.

If North Korea would quit issuing threats, kidnapping people out of their home countries, and just back down in general, no one would care what they do to their own people.
