So what is your favorite game of all time? And why?

Asked by ShanEnri (4429points) July 23rd, 2009

Can be any game. Board, ps2, xbox, wii, pc whatever. Mine is Legend of Dragoon for psx. The game is just one of those that grabs you and you find yourself playing it for hours. The graphics sucked, but it was still great to play. Your turn…

Well,I MUST say D&D. I seriously can’t see a better game than a sandbox game limited only by one’s imagination.

shuffleboard (on a table) I’ve had many, many good times with friends playing shuffle board. Plus it’s an game that is easy to play while drinking

Footie!

I dunno, I just like running around and kicking a ball into a net.

And cribbage. I like trying to strategise which combination of four cards will garner the most points.

Frontier: Elite 2 (not Elite 1). I played it non-stop for 7 years. It was an open game that allowed you to set your own goals and do whatever you like. There were practically infinite possibilities, generated in less than 512kb of floppy on an Amiga 500. There was a vast universe to explore, thousands of different planets, 3D animation at a time when even 2D was a challenge (1993) and a role-play element that is rare even today. I eventually became so good that I took out the entire Imperial navy on a Viper with no guns (yes, THAT good) and could manually land on the surface of practically anything, including gas giants and various suns. There was always a new challenge to set yourself. I even played that game again as recently as 2007.

New answer: sorry, I thought you meant computer game. If I have to pick any type of game, then I’d go with DnD too, because I was fortunate enough to have a great DM (and as most players know, it’s all about the DM). My favourite this period though is Alhambra, which is Yatzee with strategy. I think it’s an amazing game, because there is a great balance between strategy (80%) and luck (20%). Meaning you cannot win if you’re just lucky, and you can easily beat someone much luckier than you if you’re smart enough. But luck could be the winning factor between two players of the same skill.

DDR is one game that I like. It’s one that gets me off my ass for a change.

“All time”? Probably Tetris, since I played that at varying levels of obsession for the better part of a decade. Most games I get saturated with after a few months or years, after I get them the first time.

Then again, I still play Monopoly now, and the first time I played it I was probably 5 years old or so. So maybe that’s the one…

Morrowind. It just turned my internal clock off. Fallout 3 is even better but I can’t let myself get sucked in for entire days like when Morrowind came out.

Interstate 76 is the one game that really made a strong, lasting impression on me even though I didn’t play it that much. I wish someone would remake it for today’s hardware.

This is a tough one because I love games. It would probably be Yahtzee. I would play it with my grandfather whenever we visited him. Every time I hear dice shake it reminds me of him. I also enjoy Trivial Pursuit.

Air Hockey, Scrabble, and Tetris. Seriously.

I love to play cards. Spades is my all time favorite game to play. We will have spades tournaments on holidays. It’s always a lot of fun.

jonsblond's avatar

@knitfroggy Spades is my favorite card game too. It’s hard for us to find anyone to play it with us though. Everyone around here prefers Hearts.

knitfroggy's avatar

@jonsblond I don’t like Hearts. I get it confused with Spades and then I get all kinds of mad! My husband and I used to play Spades with my grandma and aunt all the time. He and I cannot be partners though, we end up arguing about betting too much and sandbagging, it ain’t pretty!

trumi's avatar

Dude, Spades is nothing compared to Euchre.

I love to play card games. I played a lot with family, when we were on on vacation at the see. I am also a big fan of risk.
But when we talk of computer games, I must say that the Gothic trilogy is my favorite. Especially the first part. It has got an interesting and mysterious story, and also the gameplay itself is magnificent for a RPG from back then.

Space Hulk the board game (first edition rules, the idiot who revised it for the second edition didn’t seem to understand the point of the game).

All you people with your intellectual games are making me feel bad! I personally like blowing people away online in Call of Duty 4. Star Wars Battlefront 2 for original Xbox was also good, but no one’s online anymore and a person can only spend so much time fighting AI enemies who frequently take time out to glitch violently in a corner.

freespace 2. there has never been a game like it afterwards.
crysis comes close second.
ff7 comes third.
i also loved grandia 2. very emotional game.

Must I choose?

Beyond Good and Evil is a cult classic that far too few people knew about.
Metal Gear Solid was such an epic game on so many levels.
Bioshock was amazing.
I could go on.

@Jack_Haas

Did you ever play Oblivion?

Sarcasm's avatar

Chrono Trigger or Diablo 2. They both managed to steal a lot of my childhood.

Deepness's avatar

Splinter Cell and any Tom Clancy series of games. I love Splinter Cell because I get to sneak around in the dark and break people’s necks. It’s so satisfying.

Jack_Haas's avatar

@Ivan Yeah I loved it but Morrowind was revolutionary, I had never played anything like it. I had crazy expectations of Oblivion and it was hyped to death but Bethesda had to scale back on their ambitions so as much as I liked it I couldn’t help but feel a bit let down.

Thammuz's avatar

@Sarcasm Chrono trigger, FUCK YEAH!

Blondesjon's avatar

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VIII (yes it was better than VII. i lurve junctioning.)
Mariocart 64 (my oldest boy would cry as a toddler if I didn’t race as Princess Peach)
Super Punch Out
Guitar Hero/Rock Band

Belly Button Patrol. But my wife absolutely hates it, and with good reason, as she is very ticklish.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

as for computer/console games, don’t feel bad @Jayne one of my favorite killing games is Manhunt. It came out many years ago, but I still play it from time to time. I love the idea of sneaking up on gang members and killing them in very brutal fashions.

My favorite driving game will always be Burnout Revenge. It came out in 2005 and I still play it almost daily.

Deepness's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra Yes, Burnout Revenge is on my top list also, It’s the best car game for me because it’s a great way for me to relieve road rage. Really releases stress taking down other cars. I love it!

dynamicduo's avatar

Oh my, what a bold question! I’m not sure if I can group them all together, so I won’t :)

Board game: Carcassonne. Everyone can play it, the game changes with the number of people and who those people are, it can be made longer or shorter, you can cooperate or not, and it doesn’t take up a ton of space.

Video game: Rock Band is great, I would group it with DDR as great games I like coming back to and playing with friends. For single player, there’s a special place in my heart for any version of The Sims, extending to Sims and Tycoon games in general. Rollercoaster Tycoon is a classic.

Roleplaying game: D&D is good, but so far my favorite has been Lowlife. It’s a crazy world where humans are long gone thanks to nuclear war, and the only living things are things like sentient pastries, giant earthworms and roaches, piles of goo, etc. Very crazy and fun!

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

There is a dice game (originally a card game) called Phase Ten that is a lot of fun. Never play it with drunks though, those people make even a fun game seem like work. just roll the fucking dice already, it’s not life or death, its a friggin game!

Another reason I like Manhunt is because it is a great way to ‘kill’ the people who have pissed me off or wronged me somehow. I don’t think murder is right for any reason, but in a game, yeah, that &%$&*$ is going down!

knitfroggy's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra We love Phase 10. We play it all sorts of ways, like make up our own Phases or pick whatever Phase you want to get based on the hand you were dealt. I’ve got the dice game but we’ve never gotten around to playing it. I also love to play Skip Bo.
