What is the best way to clean my MacBook keyboard?

Asked by simone54 (7642points) July 23rd, 2009

It is so dirty! I don’t even know how it could get that way. It’s actually kinda funny, you can tell which keys and use more and less by how much dirt is on them.

There are special cleaning wipes you can use for electronics, they work well and don’t create any static electricity. You can pick up various brands at many business supply stores

If you do use any wipes with moisture, make sure you turn the computer off when you do it, and leave it off for a while afterward, so that there’s no moisture inside when it’s turned on. This can cause damage to components more so than just a little moisture when the computer’s off.

Still though, try to avoid moisture if possible, and only use a little, if you really need to.

I use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Never had a problem.

There’s also a program called Keyboard Cleaner that you can use that’ll make your keyboard “shut off” without actually having to turn it off. adreamofautumn uses it, she doesn’t like to have to turn off all her programs. :)

She uses Q-tips like @johnpowell does to get into the keyboard bits, and has different cleaning solutions for the different parts (she takes cleaning her macbook – and mine! – to an extreme I have never before seen, it’s a monthly ritual and she tsks at me for letting mine get as dirty as it is) but I think that rubbing alcohol would work very well for the keyboard, so long as you don’t use it on the screen.

For my keyboard I just use disinfectant wipes (e.g. Lysol) and occasionally I use a vacuum cleaner to suck up any dust.

Ambersil foam is awesome for cleaning all things mac (except screens!). It removes all discolouration and evaporates instantly. Spray it onto a cloth if you’re cleaning a keyboard!!!

I use glass wipes. Works pretty good, as long as your keyboard’s not too far gone . . .

I’m just gonna put in the shower with me when I take my shower.

@efritz Thank you. Windex and paper towel saves the day again and I didn’t need to buy anything.
