Do you think Fluther should notify us when some @'s us?

Asked by BBSDTfamily (6839points) July 24th, 2009

A lot of times I go into questions, speak my 2 cents, and don’t follow the question b/c I’m not particularly interested in keeping up with it. But a few times I’ve discovered that someone responded to my post, and I just never knew it so didn’t get around in a timely manner to answer their question. Am I the only one who doesn’t like to follow more than 2 or 3 questions at a time?

I follow every Q I’ve responded to that hasn’t bothered me a ton with off topic nonsense. If I like a Q enough to respond, I generally like it enough to keep watching it. So this is not a problem for me and I don’t think it is necessary.

It would definitely be a nice perk though.

I think since there is a way to follow the action when you make a post, it is up to you to do so. If I post something, I usually then follow the question for a while to see where it goes.

No, I don’t. That’s what private messages are for, and if I really want to engage in a discussion, I go back to the question at another time.

I’ve long since stopped caring about what I do or don’t follow, as I don’t have enough time (nor inclination) to manually unsubscribe from each question I respond to.

It’s technically possible to do, but it could cause a larger delay in posting your response (the way I would do it is to scan each response for an @name, then add an alert if the person has opted in to the @ alerts).

Personally, I like the system the way it is.

I think that would be cool. Sometimes I find myself scrolling through long boring topics that I don’t care about in case some one responded to something I had mentioned. 90% of the time if some one want’s to talk to me, they don’t pm me.

I thought the same thing. If someone @‘s us I would have figured I would get a notification of some kind. Maybe just put the question back into “activity for you.” Maybe that will be the next upgrade?

Milo here; I would like to be notified when someone mentions me, please. I am saving all the compliments for my autobiography.

Yes, I agree. There should be some sort of notification if someone @‘s us.

(Ehem. Fluther gods? You hear us?)

If there were to be such a thing, I’d like it to be optional or appear as accessible links without banging on my screen and demanding attention.

[Edit] You can certainly use your browser search to look for your own name on a given page.

On pages with tons of answers that im not really following, ill just ctrl+f and search my name to see if anyone responded to me.

That would be a good idea. I support it. I also think it should be optional. It should be one of the things like “comments for you”.
