Is 10 weeks along much too early to gain pregnancy weight?
Just wondering if I can call this pregnancy weight or if I have to face the fact that I’m getting fat on my own :) Maybe I shouldn’t give in to so many of my cravings. My doctor asked me not to gain more than 25 lbs. of pregnancy weight since I gained the fertility meds weight (and I am only 5 ft. 1 in. tall) and he’s scared of gestational diabetes….
I gained 9 lbs. off fertility meds before becoming pregnant, and have gained about 5 lbs. at 11 weeks. I started gaining weight 2 weeks ago, and I thought preggo tummies were supposed to be hard but mine is squishier than ever :(

It’s probably too early, yes. It’s not impossible for some people, but it’s definitely rare.
First off, you were on fertility meds so your body is already going to easily gain weight because of that. Second, every pregnancy is different…if you gain in the first trimester it’s not a big deal.
I’m on my second pregnancy, at 10 weeks and I don’t think I’ve gained any weight. They took my weight the other day and it’s the same as my pre-preg weight with my first. I did gain a couple pounds before we conceived, but it was intentional.
I personally didn’t gain any weight until my 17 week check up with my son, and then I ballooned up to a 50lb weight gain. They told me when I was at 25lbs to stop at 30lbs…and I was like, 30 weeks…so that wasn’t happening.
I don’t listen to the doctors when they tell me what I should gain. I let my body gain the weight it needs. This pregnancy I have no cravings like I did with my son, so I think I’m going to be better about the weight gain (and also chasing after a toddler is keeping me fit.
Oh, and squishy is fine. Your uterus still has to make it’s way up, so your belly won’t be hard for a little while. Probably closer to 15–20 weeks. I can feel my uterus and the fundal height so I know mine is there and growing. Here’s a fun fundal height site. I haven’t used it personally, but friends have.
I know that breastfeeding helps moms lose weight somewhat, and I think you are right @casheroo. I’m going to make sure I’m comfortable, try to avoid too much weight gain but in the end, I can run it all off when I have the baby. Also thanks for the fundal height info, I had never heard of it.
If you’re starting out at average weight, ideal gain for the pregnancy is considered to be 25 to 35 pounds and perfect gain curve is a total of about 5 pounds in the first trimester, and then about a pound a week from there. If you’re starting out overweight, ideally you gain less, maybe 15 to 20 pounds – heavy women are at higher risk for growing excessively large babies and pregnancy induced hypertension as well as gestational diabetes.
But best laid plans. The fertilty meds have affected things, and if you need to eat frequently to control morning sickness, you’re probably going to gain a bit extra. And some women gain a surprising amount of weight even though they’re eating healthy. In my professional experience, the very healthy eaters might gain 60 pounds but lose it afterwards, and the women who are eating a typical American diet and gaining 50+ pounds are left with a lot of extra weight after the baby comes that is difficult to lose.
In both of my pregnancies I gained weight from the very beginning. There’s nothing wrong with you.
Your doctor might talk to you about gaining too fast, it can be a sign of other things – some complications – but I doubt it is, in this case. You want to gain at a steady pace, not a lot, all at once.
I wasn’t fortunate enough to feel good enough to actually eat, while pregnant…I’m a bit jealous! I gained 11lbs in one pregnancy and 14 in the other. I stayed green, the entire time!
A friend of mine gained 15 lbs during her first trimester, for a whopping total of 23 lbs for the entire pregnancy. Some women just chronologically “front load” their gain. :)
I’m kinda hoping that’s the case with me—I’m at 12 weeks, and I’ve gained 10 lbs so far. Eeek… used to be super-active before getting knocked up, now that the nausea/fatige is fading I might be able to do gentle cardio again to keep the gain under control.
