Does this book description sound familiar?

It could be Night Over Water by Ken Follett. Each chapter is about a different character and how all of their fates are intertwined.

I thought about Night Over Water, but I don’t think that’s it. A friend asked me this question for a friend of a friend, and I’m intrigued. I vaguely remember reading a review of this book about 2–3 years ago. Each page is a character description of the occupant of the seat they were sitting in.
