What is a nice, (light) gift to bring to an international host?

Asked by eadinad (1281points) July 25th, 2009

My sister and I are traveling abroad and staying with a family friend for a few days. We want to bring a small gift as a thank you. We are already bringing him some books he asked for as a favor, since he can’t get them where he lives in eastern Europe. Also, we’re backpacking, so it should be preferably something fairly light. Any suggestions?

I would consider some sort of popular craft or food (non-perishable) from your part of the country. For example, if you’re from California, maybe something surfy. If you’re from Alaska, take some canned salmon. If you’re from Georgia or South Carolina, bring peaches. Just plan on checking the bag that contains the food.

Sorry should have mentioned – we aren’t checking any bags. One carry-on each.

If you can’t bring any type of food try some kind of souvenir from your state. Maybe a ballcap or t-shirt that has your state’s name on it?

Take a small piece of local pottery or artwork, like a coffee cup or small serving bowl. A friend sometimes takes a set of American measuring cups/spoons, if she knows the person cooks. That makes cooking with American recipes that are online a whole lot easier.

A picture of you in a nice frame of you in front of a landmark of where you are from. It will last forever and be a nice reminder of the time you spent together.

Where are you coming from? As I am from Canada, I often bring little maple-leaf shaped containers of maple syrup, which make excellent gifts. I would recommend looking into any local item you can bring.

Are they sports fans? Memorabilia is good: a hat or T. Music fans? A DVD or CD. Also, what @dynamicduo said.

I travelled halfway across the world so bringing foodstuff or anything heavy from home was out of the question when I visited my friends in Florida. I bought a bottle of Grey Goose in Dallas for them. They seem appreciative of it.

You could cook him a good meal as a Thank-You gesture too.
