Should I install Windows 7?
As of right now, im running just ubuntu. I misses my my games :( so i think im going to be throwing windows on my other hard drive. Question is, do I install windows 7 or just go back to XP?
I’ve read mostly positive reviews for 7 but well i read some great reviews for vista too soooo i dont put too much weight in that kind of thing :P. Id much rather trust the collective. So what do you guys think about windows 7? What are some of the pros and cons of it?

Do it, you’ll love it.
Both nVidia and ATI already have drivers out for it, so gaming should work without a hitch.
The only con is that the RC expires in a few months. I’ll PM you with a legit RC code, if you want it.
You know you can trust me.
Windows 7 is pretty good. Not great, but it is hard to be worse than Vista. It is a lot faster. I run it in a VM and it works well.
How is it comparable to XP though?
It might be a little slower than XP. But on modern hardware you should be fine.
You can install Windows 7 Release Candidate but it will stop working for you in a few months. The interface is much nicer than in XP – the task bar is especially better.
It’s good enough that I may upgrade to it from Vista (when it comes out in October).
@doggywuv you should’ve preordered a few weeks ago, it was only $50 :/ A very worthy upgrade, especially for that price.
7 is a lot better than Vista. I’d recommend going that direction first before going back to XP.
@eambos I was going to but unfortunately I didn’t have the money :(
@doggywuv :: The 49$ upgrade only lasted a few days. They had a set amount and it sold out really fast.
I’ve been beta testing Windows 7, and I like it better than Vista. But, it is pretty much Vista with some improvements. Startup is extremely fast compared to XP, but really no other bonuses compared to XP, other than networking (wireless), in my opinion. Run XP if you want, but Win7 offers DirectX 11 (great for newer games). Don’t try 7 either if you’re low on RAM.
@uberbatman I wouldn’t suggest anything lower than 2 GB. I am running on 3 GB, but then again I just use the basics on my Win7 partition (no games).
I have fewer complaints than most it seems regarding Vista, but Amazon had a great price on the conversion from Vista to Windows 7 if preordered, and I jumped at it, and can’t wait til it gets here. I have lots of experience with both Vista and XP and it was easy picking up Vista without reading any manual. It was mostly gadgets and gimmicks and not terribly different from XP. W7 is supposed to have a good voice recognition system, which would help me a lot so I specifically am looking forward to that.
Would’ve said NO for a while ago.. but since I run it about 2 months, it beats Windows XP on a cumputer that was sold with Windows 2000! Yes it runs it and HOW. Finally a Windows that got it right. Not a match with OSX Snow Leopard but very, very close. They solved almost every driver issue, they update stable hardware drivers with windows update.
I made a list with my experiences, I must add ‘a better workflow with the taskbar’ to that.

Windows 7 is both fast, and has low system requirements. For a comparison, I can tell you that it runs nicely on my 1,66ghz, 2gb ram, 7200 rpm 120gb hd, with Intel GMA (graphics)
I wouldnt run it on a system with less than 1.5gb ram, and preferred 2 gb. Also win 7 found every driver on my computer – no extra install!
