Whats a good camcorder for an amatuer film maker?
I’m an amatuer, very humble movie maker and I need a good camcorder; I’ve got a low budget, and when I say a low budget I mean a REALLY low budget, like under $1000. Way under $1000. I want a camera with great quality because I’m focused on making movies not just recording birthday parties and sports events. I’d need some image stabilization and good optical zoom quality. any suggestions?

Remember that the camera’s only part of the package; make sure you have good editing software, hard drives and system that can handle the level of video you intend to shoot on.
If possible, consider some used equipment, especially cameras by Canon, and Panasonic (for instance, their DVX-100 series cameras), as they take really nice video and seem to emulate “film-like” color space. My guess is that you don’t want grainy “home movie” quality video, more cinematic.
As kevbo suggests, start by reading up and researching what others are using, as there are a lot of options, based on budget and objectives. My advice is to get a camera that has good glass (good lenses and image quality) over getting auto-everything and HD; you’d be surprised how many good SD cams are out there that give you great photographic features.
Otherwise, you could also look to the new Canon Rebel that shoots both stills and HD video (1080i I think), which I think can be had for under $1000, not including accessories.

While it’s compressed HD (H.264), you get the benefit of detachable lenses and a 12MP still camera.
on a side note, I would also have you check out the podcast Film Riot. Its about film making and has a lot of good tips and tricks. Best of luck and when you can link a URL to a movie you make.
