The signature Punisher skull, is it really suppose to scare away evil spirits?

Asked by FiRE_MaN (684points) July 26th, 2009 from iPhone

In the 2004 movie The Punishier his son got him a shirt with the now famous Punisher skull on it. In the movie a man said that the skull was suppose to scare away evil spirits? Is this a fact? That some people in the Caribbean thought this or was this made up for the movie or in the comic book?

I may be wrong, but it might be based on the ancient Halloween traditions in which the Celts would dress in costume to drive away evil spirits. They would also carve heads or skulls out of vegetables to help drive away spirits or superstitions.

Or it might be just a coincidence.

@ABoyNamedBoobs03: You are correct sir.

In the comic Frank Castle painted the skull emblem on his chest for two reasons:
1) To scare criminals.
2) To give criminals a perfect target to shoot at amidst a sea of black clothes. Why would you want them to shoot at your chest? One word: Kevlar. Better than a head-shot.

Also, his family was already dead when he became the Punisher. His son was not involved in the wardrobe decisions in the comic.
