Why is "7-Zip" better than "WinZip" for unzipping?

Asked by Quagmire (2088points) July 27th, 2009

I read a question on this site where people recommended a program I am not familiar with, i.e., “7-Zip” over “WinZip” and I wondered what’s different?

It handles a bunch of formats that WinZip doesn’t. I’ve used it for years, and I’ve never had an issue.

It’s good stuff.

@Lightlyseared , what IS that?

It’s completely free and open source. WinZip will keep bugging you to pay them for the “premium” version, and you’re not allowed to share the software. Additionally, if you ever wanted to make any changes to it, you’re not allowed to. 7zip is smaller, it’s 100% free, you can share it, you can change it, and it supports other archive formats such as its own .7z format, which is better than .rar or .zip.

What ^he^ said.

izarc is free archiving program. I like it because it can handle CD image files and they do a version that you don’t need to install so you can stick it on a USB drive and use it on the go.

+1 for @Ivan‘s comment :)

Oh, and the feature @Lightlyseared mentioned, about being able to run from a USB drive? 7-Zip can do that too :)
