General Question

Help me identify this bug, please!

Asked by marzapan (6points) July 27th, 2009

It’s about half an inch long, and most of it appears to be covered in a white, dryer-lint like cocoon. The tip is sort of a golden color, perhaps the wings of something? I have found several along my ceiling, in the corners by the wall.

Hard to tell without a photograph but it sounds like termites.

I have a photograph—can I post one on this site?

@marzapan You can’t post photos here, but you can upload it to a site like tinypic.com and then give us the url of the image.

Does it look anything like this

No, it looks more like cocoon than an actual bug. some are hanging from ceiling.

indian meal moth sounds like a fit except these are showing up in our bedroom, not the kitchen.

That picture is FAAAAAAAR to blurry to make anything out. Any chance you can get a clearer shot?

if you happen to have a “nicer” camera, turn your aperture down all the way so your focused on your hand and not the stuff in the background.

Looks like a finger to me.

It looks like a teeny, tiny roach (like a joint roach not a cockroach)!

Maybe termite larvae? Just google temite larvae of course in images and it looks kinda like what you’re describing.

the indian meal moths look very much like the kind that eats your clothing. You should look into getting a pest control to get rid of those kinds of moths which can be eathing either your mattress underside, the carpeting, the curtains, or something in your closet.

This shows the two moths side by side

There is also another kind of material eater, the webbing clothes moth? Either way, it’s not the moths eating your fibers, it’s the tiny caterpillars.

Buy one of the moth traps that will lure the males in, and prevent them from mating. It’s relatively cheap, and involves no dangerous pesticides for you, pets, your kids.

Personally, I am never able to find what the heck it is that they are eating. Hence the traps/
