Songs about betrayal of a friend?
Don’t really feel like going into any details, but a friend I was depending on has now backed out a huge arrangement we had. I am used to friends flaking on me, but this was on a grander scale.
Anyhow, I’m throwing together a playlist and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for songs.
Please, none of that AFI, Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, crap
here’s my last.fm if you want an idea of what I listen to…
I realize this a big favour to ask, so I’m sorry for being picky. But your guy’s help is truly appreciated.
Cheers
p.s. songs don’t necessarily require lyrics…

youtube Nakagawa-san by andy mckee, I promise you’ll at the very least relax a bit. here’s a link
small note: also one of the most relaxing songs to play yourself too
@Judi Country, like folk? Yes. If you mean Toby Keith and the like, that’s not country that’s midwest-pop.
@Judi sorry if that was harsh, I’m in a bad mood.
I lurve you
If you want a song about betrayal, two good ones I can think of are Avril Lavigne’s My Happy Ending and Carly Simon’s You’re so Vain.
If you want one to help you get away from the betrayal, I like listening to the Rainbow Connection by The Carpenters and I Believe by Fantasia Barrino. And if I just want to zonk out, I’ll probably just listen to Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk.
Are you interested in any of the Operatic arias about betrayal (which are most of them)?
Don José gets badly shafted in “Carmen” by “Carmen. Masetto watches Don Giovanni seduce sweet naive country mouse, Zerletta. There would be no opera without serious lying and betrayal.
@gailcalled Certainly, it would be an interesting change of pace.
@shockvalue: Tomorrow I’ll get a short list for you (Or as Nanki Poo sang in The Mikado, “I’ve got a little list.”)
“Wind in Your Sails” by Tony Cape and Tony Sly
Edit: Linke here
Life without You by the Amphetameanies
Disappointed and Oh Phoney by Morrissey
Broken Heart by Spiritualized
Eva Luna by Tarkio
Lousy Reputation by We Are Scientists
You’re Supposed to Be My Friend by The 1990s

The Bitch is Back by Elton John
And now for something completely different;
Un Bel Di Madama Butterfly. British Lt. seduces Cio Cio San; she gets pregnant; she expects him to return and make her happy. Ha Ha. (A stunning rendition of what may be the most beautiful operatic aria.)
Mi Trad quell’alma ingratai from Don Giovanni. Don G seduces and abandons Donna Elvira. She is not happy. Kiri Te Kanawa and James Levine. Skip the recitative if you like and start at 2:22. Another spectacular aria. A sprightly and familiar melody considering the subject matter.
And the classic kiss-off, _C’est Toi? C’est moi_from the last act of *Carmen.” Carmen has persuaded Don José to go AWOL from his military unit. Then she falls in love with a bull fighter, it being Spain. Don J does not take the news well. Listen to and watch the last two minutes if nothing else.
Ready for Wagner, Verdi or R. Strauss? Let me know.
Also, these have been great guys! Thanks.
Does anyone have anything in a more indie folk vein?
@shockvalue: MY favorite narrative indie folkj song is by Christina Lavin and is entitled:
“Regretting what I said to you when you called me at 11:00 on
Friday morning to tell me that 1:00 Friday afternoon you
were gonna leave your office, go downstairs, hail a cab, to
go out to the airport, to catch a plane, to go skiing in the
Alps for two weeks. Not that I wanted to go with you; I
wasn’t able to leave town, I’m not a very good skier, I
couldn’t expect you to pay my way, but after going out with
you for three years, I don’t like surprises. (A musical
apology)”
Here is someone else singing it:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eUS175MTz4
And here are the lyrics, in in case you can’t understand all the nasty barbs.
(This is much more fun than Wagner.)
@gailcalled while i agree that “Un Bel Di Vedremo” is an amazing aria and trully one of the best examples of what the human voice can achieve (especially when you listen to the Maria Callas version)... In my own opinion it’s more about dissapointment and disillusionment than betrayal… especially if you follow the story line to give it context… she always knew he would leave… the war would take him away. She lived in fear of it… but always expecting it. So great song… but no so much about betrayal. (Still in my top 2 arias tho… great choice).
I think you may like these
Fooled With the Wrong Guy by Beulah
One Giant Disappointment by Bad Astronaut ( kinda punky acoustic )
Bridges Burned by The Expendables ( a lil reggae dub sound for ya )
Also for some old school ( like 97 haha ) pissy punk try these songs by Osker ( a band that hasn’t been together in a long time but they were from Canada ) It’s the kinda shit I listened to in High School but it fits the category perfect…
Ballad of a Traitor
Two Faced
Asshole
sorry man most bands sing about girls/guys betraying them more often than friends so it’s hard to find songs that fit haha
@Dr_C: I know, but she does off herself in the end. The Japanese are more cavalier about that than we are, but still. Listen to YIng HUang here
Unfortunately, Tosca doesn’t sing an aria before throwing herself over the parapet and onto a mattress in the wings. And Gilda is a martyr for love.Does Donna Anna have a solo about betrayal? I can’t remember.
What’s your other top aria?
@shockvalue
Not exactly betrayal but more about being forgotten/abandoned
Remember Me by The Zutons
Well we used to be the best of friends
And we used to hang around
Now I always see you and your new girlfriend
On the sunny side of town
Oh your body is the same and your face ain’t changed
But your mind ain’t where it’s at
You’re too busy hugging and a-kissing now
And for you that can’t be bad
But I’ve made a deal with the clouds
Gonna turn that sun into rain
So you forget about your love
Come and see me again
Oh remember me I’m your best friend
And we don’t talk no more
So if you’re in the neighbourhood
Don’t forget to knock on my door
Cause I’ve got to keep the feeling, keep the feeling in
Gotta keep the feeling, keep the feeling in
Gotta keep the feeling, keep the feeling in
Gotta keep the feeling, keep the feeling in
Now I stand upon your path
And I’m shouting up to you
Won’t you come and give me a minute now
There’s a message here for you
Me and a couple of old school friends
We’re going out to drink
You can come along but leave your girl at home
It’ll give you time to think
But you called at the last minute
Said that you were staying in
Well this is not a joke old friend
I’m a-getting sick of this
Oh remember me when she leaves you
And you come and knock on my door
Well I can nurse your broken heart
Cause that’s what friends are for
Cause I’ve got to keep the feeling, keep the feeling in
Gotta keep the feeling, keep the feeling in
Gotta keep the feeling, keep the feeling in
Gotta keep the feeling, keep the feeling in
@gailcalled Pavarotti’s version of “Nessu Dorma” hands down.
