How do you set a password on a wireless lan?

Asked by bubbleblue (52points) July 27th, 2009

Sometimes my wireless internet runs faster than other times, I think it’s because others are using the connection.

You need to find the default IP address of your router, browse to it, and choose a security type and password from there. What router do you have?

It is very likely that someone else is using your unsecured network, causing slowdown. A password would be a good idea.

I’ll give you generic instructions, but knowing your router’s manufacturer and model # would really help.

First, in your URL bar, go to 192.168.1.1 (usually the default ip)
Next, type in whatever username and password. Default is “admin” for both
Next, go to the security tab.
Turn on either WEP,WPA, or WPA2.(that is in order from least to most secure)
Save, and change the setting on your laptop to connect.

Uninformed, incorrect answers should be kept to oneself.

I have a COSY router from Korea.

It looks like you want to put this:
192.168.2.1
into your adress bar in your browser. Then hit enter.

It should prompt you for a user name and password. Use “admin” for user and “1234” for the password. Click on “General Setup” on the left. From there it is up to you.

Some of you “helpers” are assuming too much. 192.168.1.1 or 2.1 are the default router IP half of the time!

Now, bubbleblue, do this:

1) Run>cmd>ipconfig
Note down the default gateway

2) In your web browser, type that gateway address you noted down and hit enter

3) If it asks for a username and password check your manual, or look here:
http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html

3) Go to the wireless section, then security. From there change the security to WPA-PSK or WPA2. Use a key generated from this site:
http://www.yellowpipe.com/yis/tools/WPA_key/generator.php

4) Avoid WEP at all means. And don’t bother with MAC filtering-both are very easwy to bypass.

Cheers
Blam

“Some of you “helpers” are assuming too much.”
