What is the safest way to download music that is not available through iTunes/Amazon/etc.?

Asked by theabk (683points) January 8th, 2008

I am trying to download an album which is not commercially available anywhere; if it were I would just buy it. Some of these “torrent” sites have it, but are they going to give me viruses, etc.? I have a Mac.

www.isohunt.com is the greatest torrent site i know of. Ive been using it for years and have yet to get any sort of virus. If torrents arent your thing you can always try www.g2p.org its a search engine that uses google to find music indexes and you can download from there, and theres no real risk of getting into legal trouble, your just using google after all ;)

‘safe’ is a relative term-you should not be downloading anything onto your computer without some reasonably up-to-date virus detection software-regardless of platform or app/torrent.

As for Mac-there are many antivirus companies out there including the usual known companies-research and proceed with caution on the D/L thing.

Me personally-I buy all my tunez legally through iTunes and Amazon, but have recently begun using subscription services to stream music-Rhapsody and Deezer are both really good for this, especially if you’re consuming music primarily from your computer.

Sony is starting a DRM free service from 15th Jan.
You can go to www.seeqpod.com/nokia. This backdoor lets you download songs that you can only stream from the main site.

I agree with uberbatman; download a program like mu torrent or bit torrent that will let you run torrents off of the web. www.isohunt.com is a great site, and i also use the priate’s bay and BT junkie.

When I first began to use BitTorrent in 2004 there was little question as to which indexing site to use. Today, Suprnova is long gone and we are left with an array of diverse options. This is a comparison of today’s ten most used BitTorrent sites according to Alexa.com.
