I recently started playing AoM again, and the random map feature struck me a quite unique. How you you guys feel about random maps? I think they are a great feature, but I can see how they would cause problems. Also, do you know of any other games that have this feature?

Randomized levels in video games is a wonderful feature, especially for replayability. It removes monotony, and also discourages cheating via looking up walkthroughs.
I agree. They also add a bit of unpredictability that promotes exploration.
I remember when I was a kid playing Heroes of Might and Magic (HoMM III, to be specific), I remember it had a random map generator, and looking at the wiki page, the most recent (HoMM V) has it as well.
Not sure if it’s exactly like how it’s handled in AoM but you may want to investigate that.
I like randomized maps/levels/dungeons in a game. I like to replay games as different classes or factions or difficulties (depending on what kind of game it is), while the randomization itself doesn’t make me want to replay the game, it makes me a lot less reluctant to do so.
But I don’t think it should be a primary feature. That was one of the major selling points for Hellgate: London, and the game failed commercially (The company fell into the crapper, and the servers were shut down, so it’s now a single-player only game).
HoMM V does not have a random map generator unless you get the Hammers of Fate expansion pack.
EDIT: *An official one.
Games with random maps include every roguelike (the most famous being Nethack, Crawl and Ancient Domains Of Mystery.) Also there are many other RTS’ and TBS’ with random map generation; including Age Of Empires, Civilization and Empire Earth.
Left 4 Dead 2 will include some randomised elements of maps (different layouts of graves inside a graveyard, for example,) in an FPS, which will be interesting.
