Why is my wireless N not working well?

Asked by TheBox193 (997points) July 28th, 2009

I have a Linksys Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router WRT400N and a wireless N card in my laptop.

The N intially connects at full strength and 300mbs but seem to diminish to connect at lower connection strength at 30mbs or 60mbs. While the Wireless G band connects at strong stength at 54mbs. Why won’t the N stay strong?

Are you paying for 300mbps?

umm, not the internet connection, just the wireless network within my house. The wireless connection between my laptop and the wireless router should be running at 300mbs, yet right now I’m connecting at 27mbs which is lower than the G network (54mbs).

There is a nice comparison at the bottom of this wiki page:

Did you try shutting it of and restarting it, and the other device..

I’ll give it a shot, I just got it a couple hours ago.

Something for you to test I haven’t confirmed on N networks yet. Turn off the wireless G device. Restart your router, does the speed stay high? If so turn on the wireless G device, does the speed now drop? I’ve heard this happening with G routers when B devices connect to them. Please confirm or deny I’d love to have confirmation. Thanks!
