What should be the ratio of cats per litter pan in ones home?

For instance if you have 5 cats, how many litter pans should you provide for them and why? In your own opinion, from experience, or is there some recommendation from a reliable source?
Edit: Also, is it dependent upon if they’re indoor or outdoor cats?
